CVE NEWS | Reinforcement and Synchronisation Are Needed to Support CCU at the EU and Member State Levels   The publication of our 7 policy guidelines to boost Carbon Capture and Utilisation (#CCU) in the next policy cycle (2024-2029) through an adequate policy framework was built on CO₂ Value Europe’s quantitative assessment (https://shorturl.at/ahB46) of CCU’s role in the EU in 2050, estimated to contribute to at least 8% in GHG reductions in 2050.   CO₂ Value Europe underlines the growing need to reinforce and synchronise support for CCU technologies through dedicated instruments at the EU and Member State levels, particularly: 🔵 The inclusion of CCU in all EU27 national climate and energy legislation and schemes (e.g. NECPs, National Recovery and Resilience Plans). This should mirror the work undertaken in the EU Temporary Crisis & Transition Framework and other adopted legislations at the EU level (e.g. RED III, ReFuelEU Aviation, etc.) with long-term perspectives and clear objectives for CCU deployment in 2030, 2040 and 2050.   🔵 The hand-in of Member States’ final version of their National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) for 2021-2030 is due in June. CO₂ Value Europe calls on Member States to consider in their final submissions the #netzero technologies listed in the recently adopted Net Zero Industry Act and the Commission’s Industrial Carbon Management Strategy, and to include all carbon management pathways including CCU, CDR and CO₂ transport.   🔵 Member States should push for EU regulations to facilitate State Aid support and investments towards strategic net zero technologies, such as CCU, as one of the levers in energy sovereignty.   🔵 Increased coordination between public funding instruments across TRLs at the EU and Member State level – for example, the Innovation Fund or Important Projects of Common European Interest. Analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shows that deployment of CCS is critical to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. To reach this goal, the United States will need to scale up to more than 1000 capture facilities nationwide, collectively sequestering at least 1 billion tonnes of CO2 per year. CRC’s carbon management business, Carbon TerraVault, is developing CCS and direct air capture plus storage (DAC+S) projects that inject CO2 captured from industrial sources into depleted underground reservoirs and permanently store CO2 deep underground. Reliance on carbon capture and storage (CCS) could release billions of tonnes of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere between 2020 and 2050, a new report has concluded. The report from think tank Climate Analytics calculates the additional emissions that could result from continued fossil fuel use excused by a reliance on CCS. The report comes as patent data analysis from Appleyard Lees shows historic highs for capture utilisation and storage technologies. #netzero #carboncapture #emissions

NEW: A report from CATF takes a holistic view of major #carboncapture and storage projects and finds the technology is working – and highlights opportunities for increased climate benefits at future projects. The report examines the performance of 13 significant carbon capture and storage projects and provides a means to evaluate the success of existing projects to better understand the technology’s future impact on climate action. The findings show that several large-scale carbon capture projects have consistently met high levels of technical performance, and when combined with innovation and thoughtful policy can establish a high standard for climate performance. #CCS https://lnkd.in/gR3nxFGp
