SHOTGUN SEQUENCING Shotgun sequencing is a laboratory technique for determining the DNA sequence of an organism’s genome. The method involves randomly breaking up the genome into small DNA fragments that are sequenced individually. A computer program looks for overlaps in the DNA sequences, using them to reassemble the fragments in their correct order to reconstitute the genome. 4 days to go until the big day! 🎉 I recently completed my research work at the Helix Biogen Institute, and it was a truly great experience. As a newcomer to the field of bioinformatics, I had some preconceived notions about what a laboratory environment would be like. I expected to see many people in lab coats, carrying out various scientific experiments. However, to my surprise, the lab was filled with desktops instead! 🤔 I guess I had a limited understanding of the field of bioinformatics. My project focused on ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay), which wasn't my first time working with this technique, but it was a more detailed and enriching experience. I was also privileged to observe the process of DNA extraction, which was quite a lengthy procedure. Fortunately, my prior knowledge of DNA extraction helped me better understand the entire process. I specially appreciate Helix Biogen Institute for granting us the opportunity to make our project work a huge success and for the expanding our knowledge on this field of science. The determination and focus of both the staff and interns in the laboratory was very captivating and motivated to do better. I'm looking forward to providing a more comprehensive overview of my project work in my next post. #bioinformatics #researchwork #GraduationCountdown
