2024 World Congress of Epidemiology: Meet the Speakers I We are less than 1 year away from the start of the 2024 World Congress of Epidemiology and we are excited to announce our panel of plenary speakers. Each of our plenary speakers will be addressing a state-of-the-art topic in the field, integrating the latest developments in epidemiological thinking and their application in public health. Introducing our speakers: Professor Naja Hulvej Rod from the University of Copenhagen. Topic: Public health and complexity: concepts and methods. Prof. Rod is an epidemiologist whose research deals with large public health challenges - including sleep, health inequality, and early life adversity - with a focus on causal inference, complexity, and life course mechanisms. Professor Salim Abdool Karim from the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) & University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Topic: What has epidemiology learned from modern pandemics: COVID and HIV? Prof. Abdool Karim is a clinical infectious diseases epidemiologist whose research interests are in HIV prevention, treatment of HIV-TB co-infection, as well as the epidemiology and prevention of Covid-19. I am Tanyi Mariette, a postgraduate student in Epidemiology and Control of infectious diseases (BSc Microbiology). A young Cameroonian passionate about improving health in my community, and throughout my studies I have been able to volunteer in a laboratory and been part of campaigns such as Hepatitis campaign, HIV, and Malaria, Polio campaigns, act as a district supervisor representative. My expertise lies in understanding the distribution, patterns, and determinants of health-related events, by using statistical tools and epidemiological models to assess risk factors, monitor trends to conduct research, collect, analyse data, and interpret findings that inform evidence-based decision-making. I'm passionate about empowering the community to make informed health decisions by creating awareness of the need for medical care that drives their well-being. I'm dedicated to delivering tailored solutions that meet their unique needs. All these are in line with the quest towards improving Sustainable Development Goal 3 (good, health and wellbeing) I know every little activity done to build a community positively, counts. Researcher Spotlight! Say hello to Manza Agovi, PhD. Dr. Agovi is a Research Scientist & Manager in the JPS Center for Epidemiology & Healthcare Delivery Research. Her doctoral training was in epidemiology from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Agovi’s research aims to optimize the effectiveness, efficiency, and equity of healthcare delivery. She specializes in implementing evidence-based practices, evaluating healthcare interventions, and improving medication adherence, particularly in the contexts of primary care and HIV management. Welcome to a lecture on the Epidemiology of Tuberculosis, featuring Dr. Philippe Glaziou, Senior Epidemiologist at the World Health Organization. Dr. Glaziou leads the epidemiology sub-team of the Global TB Programme at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, bringing extensive experience in TB research and public health. Let's get to know Dvora Joseph Davey. Dvora is an Honorary Associate Professor of Epidemiology, UCT & Associate Professor of Infectious Disease Medicine and Epidemiology, University of California Los Angeles, USA. Dvora conducts epidemiologic studies on how best to prevent and treat HIV and other STIs in pregnant and breastfeeding women, couples, and other vulnerable populations. Her research interests lie in the interdisciplinary space between epidemiology, social science and implementation science. She enjoys using innovative and participatory methods to develop and rapidly evaluate complex interventions that improve the health of diverse populations. Dvora is also an active mentor for MPH, PhD and postdoctoral epidemiology students and colleagues to improve their ability to lead innovative, independent research. On Saturday, we concluded four exciting days at #UnionConf2023 with a session led by JSI, emphasizing the importance of system strengthening for an effective national TB program. In addition to all the oral presentations delivered throughout the week, TIFA India grantee National Institute Of Epidemiology (icmr) also presented two e-posters— 1) A study on the impact of active case finding for TB among marginalized and vulnerable populations in #India for the year 2021, considering scale, frequency, and target population choices; it serves as a baseline for future analyses. 2) A cross-sectional study conducted in six Indian states among TB patients who completed treatment between May and October 2022 under the National TB Elimination Program, aiming to determine the proportion of patients receiving at least one Nikshay Poshan Yojana benefit and detailing the utilization patterns of this benefit. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to highlight this important work at #UnionConf2023, and look forward to building on the learning and connections from the conference. #EndTB
