Last weekend, I caught up with Matthew Raisbeck, a childhood friend. Matthew is a Newcastle United Football Club commentator on BBC and is spending a few days in Paris to commentate the Newcastle United/Paris Saint-Germain match tonight! Matthew studied journalism at the university of Sunderland, before getting into a broadcasting career. He provided some fantastic tips on how to speak confidently. This could massively help lawyers when speaking on a podcast, a panel, or during an interview with a journalist, for example. 🗣️Clarity. This is essential to maintain audience engagement and convey information effectively. Clear communication helps listeners follow the conversation, understand the content and stay connected. It also reflects professionalism, building trust with the audience, making whatever you are discussing more enjoyable and informative. 🗣️Pace. This influences audience engagement. A well-managed pace maintains interest, prevents boredom and allows listeners to absorb information. A slow pace helps to emphasize key points and provides moments for reflection, enhancing overall comprehension and retention of the content, whereas a faster pace can sometimes be needed for a bit of “oomph”. 🗣️Tone. Intonation conveys emotions, intentions and the overall mood of the message. The right tone will help to connect with the audience, establish a rapport and communicate the intended message. It contributes to the overall atmosphere of the conversation, influencing how the content is perceived by listeners. 🗣️Structure. This provides organization and coherence to your message. A well-defined structure helps in presenting information logically, making it easier for the audience to follow the conversation. It enhances clarity, highlights key points and contributes to a more engaging and comprehensible experience for the listeners. 🗣️Succinctness. Being concise helps deliver information in a focused manner, keeping the audience's attention and preventing unnecessary complexity.
