    I recently had a conversation with Wesley Lainé, a Sciences Po and Harvard Law School graduate and Senior Associate at a prominent US law firm based in Paris. Wesley is dually qualified to practice law in both the US and the EU. He offers guidance to corporations on a wide array of regulatory matters involving both jurisdictions, and he advises investors on French foreign investment control in corporate transactions. When asked what advice he would offer his younger self at the start of his legal career, Wesley shared some insightful words…💼✨ “I am very fortunate. I always had a very supportive family who pushed me to become the lawyer that I am today, particularly my own lawyer, my dad. When I look back at my younger years, I think that what I would tell my younger self is this: “Wesley, everything that you will ever want in life is on the other side of fear.” Danielle, I’m really glad that you asked me this question because it gives me an opportunity to reflect and give some advice to the new generation of lawyers. Fear kills more ambition than failure ever will. I want the new generation of lawyers to know that temporary setbacks pave the way for significant comebacks if you seize the opportunity. Keep in mind that failures or setbacks are just momentary hurdles on the journey toward achieving greater success or a resurgence. When you are on the brink, a remarkable comeback changes you for the better. You develop resilience, adaptability and perseverance amidst adversity. You now know how to overcome challenges, cultivate a positive mindset and get through tough situations. Sciences Po and Harvard Law School were some of the happiest years of my life because I met the most caring and brilliant people who are today my friends and colleagues. If you are that young lawyer starting out, I want you to know that you must speak up because everyone has something important to say.     Last week, I had a conversation with Fadi Dahlan investor and Managing Partner at Cl Venture Capital in Abu Dhabi. Cl Venture Capital is renowned for its specialized #venturecapitalinvestments, focusing on technological industries such as F&B, #FinTech and the development of #SuperApps. Recently, the company signed an agreement with Beltone Venture Capital to manage a $30 million fund to support fast-growing #earlystagestartups.🚀 When discussing business development advice lawyers could use, Fadi highlighted the importance of cross-border relationship building: 👉Referrals play an important role in business development. Lawyers need to create solid relationships not only with local counsel but also with counterparts in overseas offices. 👉Fadi stressed that just as investing in startups requires an understanding of diverse countries and cultures, lawyers seeking to expand their international reach and referrals must also appreciate this diversity. 👉In dealing with overseas firms, Fadi advises lawyers to consider cultural sensitivity and open-mindedness. He emphasizes the importance of building long-term relationships based on trust, respect and a commitment to finding win-win solutions. 👉He added “Tailor your communication to each individual. Stay in touch through email, phone calls and video conferences, but arrange face-to-face meetings whenever possible. Share relevant legal updates and news from your jurisdiction. Provide training sessions on relevant topics. Consider sending thoughtful gifts on special occasions. Build trust by being transparent and following through on commitments”.     I recently caught up with Amandine Souin, Legal Counsel/Assistant Director at Rothschild & Co. Prior to joining Rothschild & Co, she was a lawyer at major international law firms such as Skadden and Shearman & Sterling. I asked Amandine to share some practical advice for lawyers trying to improve their marketing skills… 👉She encourages lawyers (whatever their level of seniority) to author legal articles (individually or with a partner depending on the firm's policy). Amandine pointed out that she authored her first ever article, on her own, on insider trading issues… in 2016! She had barely one year of experience… Since then, she has authored many more. Amandine explained that “writing articles will help develop essential skills such as legal research, critical thinking and effective communication as well as help practice articulating complex legal concepts in a clear and concise manner. It will contribute to building a stand-out reputation and could even open doors to speaking engagements!” 👉Amandine also suggests “when you see any legal developments that a client would be interested in, do make sure you let them know. Either inform your counterpart, or, if you think that someone more senior would be interested or should be aware, let the partner know. The client will appreciate the proactive approach, and awareness of legal changes will enable them to make informed decisions”. The same goes for any client updates: “Maybe you follow your clients on LinkedIn and they have announced a new project, initiative or even a new joiner in their team? Don’t hesitate to show that you are informed.
