Clinical Outcomes, Blood Utilization, and Ethical Considerations for Pediatric Patients in a Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program https://buff.ly/3uFSW41 🩸 Question: As parents cannot legally refuse lifesaving interventions for their children, what are the clinical outcomes, ethical considerations, and blood utilization rates when parents request bloodless care for their children? 🩸 Findings: Pediatric patients receiving bloodless care exhibited similar rates of adverse outcomes when compared to standard care patients, with no mortalities. Although ~6% of pediatric patients in our study cohort ultimately received an allogeneic transfusion, none were administered under a court order. 🩸 Meaning: When delivered in a collaborative and patient-centered manner, bloodless care can be safely provided to pediatric patients, thereby reducing the associated risks and costs of allogeneic blood transfusions. #PedsAnes

"Since our Rheumatology Department at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital began using Vula Mobile in September 2023, we have observed significant improvements in managing referrals. The app has streamlined our communication, enabling efficient triage and the provision of timely advice. A case involved a young patient with multisystem symptoms from one of the district hospitals. Using Vula, we effectively coordinated with other specialties, including dermatology and internal medicine, and formulated a clear management plan within 10 minutes of discussion. This was a considerable improvement over the previous, time-consuming process that often overburdened the referring doctor.  Moreover, Vula has not only enhanced the quality of our patient care but has also significantly reduced operational inefficiencies, particularly in the processing of referrals. Prior to adopting Vula, our department lacked precise data on patient referrals, often relying on estimates from phone calls routed through a busy switchboard. This old method was cumbersome, time-consuming, and prone to information loss and the need for repeated inquiries for additional information. The introduction of Vula has transformed this aspect of our work, ensuring more accurate, efficient, and streamlined communication and management of patient referrals." We are pleased to present our research poster, titled: "The Benefits of Clinical Pharmacists on Perioperative Medication Management in a Latin American Hospital: A Retrospective Study." at the European Society of Clinical Pharmacy (ESCP) clinical workshop in #ESCPBratislava24 This analysis highlights the significant role of surgical clinical pharmacists at Hospital Clínica Bíblica, in optimizing perioperative medication therapy. Our findings also indicate the need for further collaboration with medical and nursing staff to enhance interventions in antibiotic prophylaxis, thromboprophylaxis, and overall patient support throughout the perioperative process. A clinical trial funded by the The National Institutes of Health demonstrated that silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is effective in stopping tooth decay in young children, with 54% of cavities halting progression compared to 21% with a placebo. SDF, already FDA-approved for dental sensitivity, can be painlessly applied and has been used globally for decades due to its ability to kill cavity-causing microbes and aid tooth repair.
