In the past three days, wildfires across Colusa, Lake, Napa, Sonoma, Solano, and Yolo counties have burnt over 11,000 acres, more than the total acreage burned in the previous three years combined in these areas. Coverage for these wildfires still under 40 percent. These include the #PointFire and the #SitesFire, which has heavily affected the surrounding area. #WildfireAlert

A video looking back on 2023 and the strong work in the CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit. Our Unit did not see the destructive wildfires that it has in years past - just 345 wildfires that burned only 676 acres in 2023. For a recent comparison to show how much of a relief we’ve seen, the annual averages between 2015-2020 was 526 wildfires that burned on average over 172,000 acres per year across Colusa, Lake, Napa, Solano, Sonoma and Yolo counties.

Wildfires Threaten Nearly One Third of U.S Residents and Buildings Photo Credit: A highway warning sign displays a message while the sun is shrouded in thick wildfire smoke behind it on August 15, 2021 near Lakeview, Oregon. Mathieu Lewis-Rolland/Getty Images A new approach to calculating wildfire risk shows that more people and places in the U.S. are in harm’s way than previously thought USDA Forest Service, working with Montana researchers, took a new approach to measuring #wildfirerisk and limited its historical analysis to the 15 years between 2004 and 2018. A previous analysis considered conditions over 34 years ending in 2012. Nearly 75 percent of #tribal area residents are in counties with high wildfire risk. And nearly 20 percent of high-risk counties have a large share of mobile homes, the analysis found. The new version includes updated data about where homes and buildings are located and what types of trees, shrubs and grasses are present on various #landscapes . The changes help capture the risk of “low-probability, high-impact events like those that we’ve recently seen in parts of the country, like the Pacific Northwest,” Pohl of Headwaters said. “And we’re better able to represent the way embers can spread #wildfires into communities.” Link to the full article below:
