An estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enters the world’s ocean each year — the equivalent of dumping a garbage truck of plastic waste into the ocean every minute. A recent National Academies report examines the United States' contributions to global ocean plastic waste, examining trends in U.S. plastic production and waste generation, how plastic gets to the ocean, impacts on marine life, and interventions that can help reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in oceans. We can make a difference by simple alternatives #marinepollution #plastic #sustainability Carry reusable shopping bags when going for shopping. Say no to plastic straws, utensils, and other single-use plastic items. Instead of using disposable containers for food and beverages, opt for reusable containers made from materials like glass, stainless steel. Carry a refillable water bottle instead of buying single-use plastic water bottles. Ensure that you dispose of waste properly by recycling and composting whenever possible. Educate Others.....

Plastic pollution is a global problem, with plastic waste being found in even the most remote and pristine environments, including Antarctica and the Arctic. Additionally, studies have shown that plastic pollution isn’t just an oceanic issue; it affects freshwater ecosystems as well, with rivers and lakes around the world heavily contaminated with plastic waste.

I am glad to share with you that the video presentation. It is important to note that: "There is a growing concern about plastic waste in the environment worldwide. In addition to harming ecosystems, human health, and the future of the planet, plastic pollution has long-range consequences. The purpose of this video is to provide an overview of the causes, effects, and solutions related to plastic waste".

Tearfund recently published this paper, alongside David Wilson, Costas Velis, Ed Cook and Patrick O'Hare, which reframes the discussion around waste management in the #PlasticsTreaty negotiations. We believe that waste management is a complementary rather than a competing priority to reducing plastic production. The #PlasticsTreaty has the potential to make a life-changing difference to the billions of people globally who do not currently have access to waste collection services. However, despite this, waste management is yet to receive sufficient attention at the negotiations. We need ambitious action if we are to end #PlasticPollution and its devastating impacts on human health and the environment. We are calling on member states to support this proposal for the treaty text at #INC4 in Ottawa next month. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e5Yq7dYZ

Project STOP Director, FRSA FCIWM - Solid waste in low and middle income countries / Inclusive waste and recycling systems / waste livelihoods
Absolutely delighted to see this report, and what is more to see someone of David C. Wilson's reputation team up with an independent and credible organisation like Tearfund and supported by solid research from Ed Cook and Costas Velis to call for the extension of municipal solid waste collection, really makes such a strong case. I have been depressed and alarmed to see solid waste management treated at best as an afterthought but at worst as a kind of ‘collaboration with the enemy’ during the various #plastictreaty discussions thus far. It is entirely complementary to reducing plastic production and encouraging more reuse, refill etc. Indeed this has made me think deeply about many of the communities in which I work in Indonesia. Waste arisings per household are much lower than in the global north, there is already a well-embedded reuse culture supported by a thriving repair sector at rates, again, well above the global north, and informal recyclers collect economically recyclable materials at rates way higher than in much of the global north. It could be said that the reduce, reuse and recycle elements have been to some extent addressed. The gap lies in waste management – in collecting, processing and in some cases safely disposing that relatively small portion of material that has little economic value. Introducing waste management could make a tangible difference to public health and environment in the short to medium term for billions whilst policy decisions that reduce volumes are still filtering down over the longer term.

I am very pleased to collaborate with Tearfund on this paper to reframe the discussion around waste management in the #PlasticsTreaty negotiations. We absolutely need to ‘turn off the tap’ by upstream actions to reduce plastic production, but we also need to ‘stop the bath-tub overflowing’ through proper waste management. Modelling for this paper by Costas Velis and Ed Cook of the University of Leeds shows that extending municipal solid waste collection to the ~2.7 billion people currently without a service, and controlling disposal of the 40% of collected waste that is dumped and/or open burned (i.e. achieving 95% compliance under SDG indicator 11.6.1) would reduce macroplastics dispersal to the environment by 77% and open burning by 90%. The #PlasticsTreaty is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to end #PlasticPollution. To achieve that requires effective action BOTH on reducing plastics production AND on waste management. In this paper, we put forward an alternative, fit-for-purpose text on waste management for negotiators before their next meeting, #INC-4 in Ottawa from 23-29 April 2024. Please help us spread this proposal.
