To better understand the changes in this resource and the impact of climate change on the water cycle, scientists rely on the complementarity between spatial data and in situ data. Let's explore the benefits of this integrated approach together. 🌐 𝘈 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 Satellites provide global geographic coverage, allowing the monitoring of vast regions, including remote or difficult-to-access areas. They are excellent observers of large-scale natural phenomena (floods, droughts, etc.), both spatially and temporally. 🔍 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩 However, observation from space is not enough. Satellite observations are frequent but limited by revisit periods. Therefore, it is essential to return to Earth to collect in situ data. These field measurements, which are highly precise, allow us to: ➜ Measure parameters not observable by satellite: ocean salinity, surface velocity, river flow rates, etc. ➜ Capture local and sudden variations such as floods. ➜ Offer continuous monitoring at a fine scale, essential for resource management and decision-making in emergencies. ➜ Calibrate and validate satellites to ensure the reliability of their data. 🚀 𝘷𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘟-𝘪𝘰: 𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘫𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘭/𝘝𝘢𝘭 Thanks to its technical expertise and advanced technologies, vorteX-io contributes to the calibration and validation of satellite data. 👏 Let’s give it up for ARGANS! The leading Earth observation company has contributed a significant dataset of 8,000 square kilometres to The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans Seabed 2030 Project in our mission of mapping the entire ocean floor by 2030. Using cutting-edge satellite-based remote sensing technologies, the high-resolution bathymetric data submitted by ARGANS shines a light on regions where conventional ocean vessels typically cannot reach. POLAR WEATHER: European Space Agency - ESA’s Arctic weather satellite passes environmental test for orbit ESA’s #Arctic weather #satellite has passed its environmental test campaign – meaning that the satellite has been declared fit for liftoff and its life in space. This new satellite, which is slated for launch in June 2024, has been designed to show how it can improve #weatherforecasting in the Arctic – a region that currently lacks data for accurate short-term forecasts. Abstract :"#Satellite #laser #altimetry measures accurate elevations of the Earth’s surface and precise changes with time, monitoring key climate variables. These observations have transformed understanding of the #Earth System, revealing changes and dynamics across spheres. In this Review, we highlight the Earth and #climate #science contributions from three #NASA #satelliteLaser altimeter missions: Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (#ICESat; 2003–2009), ICESat-2 (2018 to present) and Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI; 2018 to present). Over two decades of observations, satellite altimetry revealed cryosphere decline, including a loss of 320 Gt yr−1 in global land ice from Greenland and Antarctica, and a 30% decrease in volume of winter sea ice in the Arctic between 2003 and 2021. Observations have also been key to understanding ecosystems on land, providing data on the hydrosphere (showing that 57% of the Earth’s seasonal terrestrial water storage variability comes from human-managed reservoirs) and biosphere (showing that forest carbon stocks have globally increased owing to growth, despite a loss of the equivalent of ~8 Gt CO2 from land use). In the atmosphere, the data have enabled assessment of the global vertical cloud distribution, aerosol fraction, and dust and smoke transport. There is currently no planned satellite laser altimeter mission to continue from ICESat-2 and #GEDI, jeopardizing critical #datacollection that supports #decisionmaking and environmental management. Key points NASA’s three satellite laser altimeter missions (ICESat, GEDI and ICESat-2) have provided surface elevation data for #monitoring essential climate variables across the Earth system, at high spatial and temporal resolution. In the cryosphere, ICESat and ICESat-2 observations revealed a decline in sea ice thickness in the Arctic and a loss of land ice from glaciers, the Greenland Ice Sheet and the Antarctic Ice Sheet, and provided insights into the drivers of loss. In the biosphere, ICESat, ICESat-2 and GEDI measured vegetation structure and ground heights across all ecosystems to better quantify changes to the biosphere in response to climatic and anthropogenic forces. In the hydrosphere, ICESat, ICESat-2 and GEDI inventoried and monitored global water reservoirs and sea level changes including in the Arctic Ocean. ICESat-2 provides nearshore bathymetry for benthic mapping and coastal geomorphology. In the atmosphere, ICESat and ICESat-2 have provided vertical structure of global clouds and aerosol layers critical to modelling radiative fluxes. #GEOMARNews | 🌊 METEOR Expedition uses the Eastern Mediterranean as a laboratory for the future Tomorrow, the research vessel #METEOR will leave Cyprus for a four-week research cruise in the Eastern Mediterranean, led by the #GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. The Eastern Mediterranean Sea is particularly affected by climate change and human activities and is changing rapidly. The planned investigations across a diverse range of oceanic settings will provide information on what these changes look like and what they mean for the ecosystems of a future (sub)tropical ocean. The data collected will be combined with information from satellites and other autonomous platforms and modelling to provide a comprehensive picture of the changes. NASA's Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) Mission Recently released datasets from the SWOT mission provide scientists with previously unavailable measurements of Earth's surface water. Measurements of Earth's surface water just got a lot more precise. With the SWOT mission, hydrologists and oceanographers can now estimate river flow, track regional sea level changes, monitor coastal processes, and observe small-scale ocean currents and eddies. Thanks to the SWOT data, we can now create detailed maps of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs that will enable accurate monitoring to provide a view of freshwater resources, even in remote locations. Plus, we can better track droughts and floods with derived volumetric measurements of these bodies of water. On top of that, scientists can now view the ocean with unprecedented clarity, allowing them to detect even the smallest features such as fronts, eddies, and waves. This data will help improve physics models and forecasts, while also providing a better understanding of the role the ocean plays in climate change. For the first time, we can monitor sea level, tides, and coastal sea level variations all the way into estuaries with a resolution that will contribute to our understanding of local coastal changes. TRISHNA What is TRISHNA mission? The Thermal Infra-Red Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural Resource Assessment mission, is a collaborative endeavor between indian space agency ISRO and french space agency CNES. The satellite will operate in 761 km sun-synchronous orbit to provide high spatial and temporal monitoring of earth. Mission objectives: a.      Primary Objective: Detailed monitoring of energy and water budget of the continental biosphere for quantifying terrestrial water stresses and high-res observation of water quantity b.      Secondary Objective: Comprehensive assessment of urban heat islands, detection of anomalies linked to geothermal sources, and precise monitoring of snow/glacier melt-off.
