SHOW REVIEW: Meteorological Technology World Expo 2024 #MetTechWorldExpo, the world’s leading meteorological exhibition, welcomed more than 150 international exhibitors from all over the world last week to the Messe Wien Exhibition & Congress Center in #Vienna, #Austria. With the latest #meteorological, #hydromet, #metocean and environmental monitoring technologies and services on show, attendees were able to take advantage of three full days of intense networking with a wide range of industry experts. Many products were launched and executive partnerships were forged with visiting buyers from national meteorological and #hydrological services, environmental agencies, research institutes, #universities and a whole host of #weather-critical industries. The expo also hosted the World Meteorological Organization Technical Conference on Meteorological and Environmental Instruments and Methods of Observation (TECO-2024) – one of the most important events in the meteorological industry calendar. The event’s theme was on ‘Measurements and new technologies for #WMO priority initiatives’. United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) concludes early warning systems workshop for #Somalia The National Technical Consultation Workshop on 'Disaster Tracking, Data Management, and Early Warning Systems for Somalia' has concluded successfully in #Nairobi, Kenya.  Organized by the #UNDRR Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) in collaboration with the @Somali Disaster Management Agency (#SODMA), the five-day workshop, held October 7-11, 2024, brought together key stakeholders and experts to enhance the country's disaster preparedness and risk management capabilities. “UNDRR ROAS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somalia in strengthening its #disaster management systems and advancing the country's disaster risk reduction goals,” the UNDRR said in a statement. DATA: Deep-learning frameworks could result in near-perfect 10-day weather forecasts, the University of Washington finds Researchers at the University of Washington have examined a #deeplearning approach to understanding how small changes to initial conditions impact #weatherforecasts. The resulting paper, named Predictability Limit of the 2021 Pacific Northwest Heatwave From Deep-Learning Sensitivity Analysis, was published in Volume 51, Issue 19 of Geophysical Research Letters. It was written by P Trent Vonich, professor of atmospheric and climate science at the University of Washington, and Gregory J Hakim, who is also part of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington. NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration to receive US$15.3m to improve #climate projections of extreme weather “This investment, made possible thanks to President #Biden’s historic Inflation Reduction Act, will develop new information services to help communities better prepare for the impacts of extreme weather and climate disasters brought on by #climatechange,” said US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “With this investment, NOAA and our partners are working directly with diverse end-user groups to co-develop climate services tailored to specific needs such as addressing coastal inundation, extreme heat, wildfires and other climate impacts,” said Jainey Bavishi, assistant secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and deputy NOAA administrator. Met Office research could enhance long-range #forecasting Scientists at the #MetOffice have discovered that, away from the tropics, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (#ENSO) can influence #Atlantic weather patterns a full year from the original event. Adam Scaife, the report’s lead researcher and a professor at the Met Office, said, “This latest research reveals that #ElNiño is often followed by positive North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) a whole year later, while #LaNiña is followed by negative NAO one year later. This has major implications for understanding ENSO, explaining our winter climate variability and interpreting long-range predictions.” Professor Rowan Sutton, director of the Met Office Hadley Centre, said, “This is exciting new research which reveals unexpected potential for valuable forecasts of UK and European winter weather over a year ahead. Such forecasts could be valuable for long-range risk and contingency planning, for example in the energy sector or in flood preparedness."
