Last week, I had the opportunity to sit down with the League of Minnesota Cities’ executive director, Luke Fischer. We talked about many things, including my favorite form of community engagement - popping up unexpectedly with treats, and the need to be intentional and persistent when building trust with people who have been repeatedly harmed. We wrapped up the conversation with an intriguing question: what are some baseline things leaders can do to support equity and inclusion practitioners and drive change? Here’s what I offered: 1. Show up. Your physical presence in a place means a lot. Popping into a meeting, dropping by a community festival, attending a lunch and learn: those things matter. 2. Establish the systems and structures needed to ensure execution. This includes things like creating an office, adopting a strategic plan, and, of course, the funding and staff resources to maintain these structures. 3. Support out loud. Don’t just tell me you value the work. When voters/staff catch you in the hallway and express their disdain or concern for investing in the work tell them. That’s my hot take, but I’m interested in hearing from others. What are your thoughts? How do you support staff who lead REIB work?
