Every year Google's Year in Search reveals the top trending searches. In the world of cinema last year, it was all about "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer." These two flicks claimed the top spots in the U.S. and globally. On the small screen, "The Last of Us" and "Ginny & Georgia" were some of the top trending shows in the U.S. Did you watch (or search for) either of these? The music scene was rocking too, with artists like Jason Aldean, Ice Spice, and Sam Smith making waves. It seems like 2023 had a soundtrack for everyone. And let's not forget the burning questions of the year. "How often do you think about the Roman Empire?" topped the list of "How often" searches. Remember, these aren't the top searches; they're the top trending searches, reflecting the buzz and excitement of the year. Who knows what 2024 has in store for us? What do you predict we'll be searching for in the year ahead? And, how often do you think about the Roman Empire?! https://zurl.co/thvD #GoogleSearch #YearInSearch #TrendingTopics

Very pleased to share the publication of the article "Why Online Consumption Communities Brutalize" in the Journal of Consumer Research, co-authored by Marius K. Luedicke and Kristine de Valck. https://lnkd.in/eJ3NbeXh Analyzing nearly 20 years of interactions, the study traces the transformation of an online community for fans of clubbing and electronic dance music. From a space of peace, love, unity, and respect, it evolved into one plagued by sadistic entertainment, clan warfare, and popular justice. The research reveals that consumption communities can become nefarious environments, rather than inherently prosocial lovefests. It explains why some online communities are more prone to brutalization and why violence in online communities typically does not bleed into in-person interactions. Additionally, the study introduces a novel approach to addressing online toxicity and provides insights into the violent dynamics prevalent on social media. For those interested but short on time, here's an 800-word blog post on consumerresearcher.com summarizing the main points. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/euT8SkX4 #OnlineCommunities #ConsumerResearch #JournalPublication #Trolling #FlameWar #CyberHarrassment
