CAE’s Director of Flight Operations, Lou Nemeth, FRAeS, MSNDR, ATP, a highly regarded aviator and member of the US commemorative Air Force recently received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the US Federal Aviation Administration for his 50+ years of piloting experience. From commercial planes to corporate jets to vintage military aircraft, his expertise makes him the "wright" captain to guide any flight. 📜Having fled the 1956 Hungarian revolution with his family, Lou found a new home in Florida. With an insatiable thirst for knowledge, he seized every opportunity with determination. Whether he was spearheading the development of a diabetes telemetry management system, embracing numerous roles in aviation, or earning his certification from Harvard Law as an arbitrator— his tenacity is beyond dispute! 💡 Among his many achievements, he successfully patented and licensed a simulation feature currently being used on 65 full-flight simulators by 20 flight training organizations worldwide. Lou developed additional simulation features that help every pilot in the world in recovery and upset prevention training, ultimately reducing accidents caused by loss of control during flight. 🗝️What makes a master pilot, through Lou’s lens? He believes it’s a combination of skills. They exhibit passion and persistence to learn something new because, in aviation, there's always more to discover. They are also resilient and work through those “fight or flight” moments by making adversity a source of strength. And most importantly, they enjoy working with people. Whether it’s your co-pilot up in the sky, or the entire ecosystem of people who support you down on the ground, being a master pilot requires you to deeply value collaboration. Colleagues have called him a visionary and the guy every aviator aspires to be. We’re thrilled to call him a member of our CAE team. #CAESpotlight

Living Legends? Three hits and a miss... I read this article with bemused indignation. I consider Fred George, Steve Hinton and Marc Parent to be worthy recipients of this award. Each of these individuals has made a unique, longstanding and noteworthy contribution to aviation. Regarding Harry, I cannot comprehend why he was honored, or even invited to attend this event! There are other royals whose aviation credentials make them eminently more worthy, not the least of whom being King Charles III. Charles was both a military helicopter pilot and achieved the dubious distinction of crashing a BAe146 on the island of Islay, Hebrides, back in 1994! No living member of the British royal family qualifies as being much more than notorious (which applies both to Charles and his brother, Andrew)! Harry trained as a combat helicopter pilot, like thousands of other military veterans. While his military service was commendable, his brief and unremarkable military service history in no way qualify him as a legend, living or otherwise! Worse, by honoring an unworthy candidate, for the sake of a photo opportunity and a few column inches in a handful of national newspapers, the selection criteria and credibility of these awards have to be questioned. There are hundreds of industry veterans and leaders who are significantly more worthy than Harry. Better yet, they haven't achieved their high public profile by exploiting being born into a royal family they have recently devoted their lives to denigrating, in the interests of making money. As an industry, we need to honor people who dedicate their energies and careers to advancing the interests of aviation. By any objective measure, Harry is not such a person. An unfortunate and undeserved award that inserts the entire aviation industry in a family feud that does nothing to advance any industry causes.

The company seems to have overlooked the infamous “Great Engine War” between them and GE, spawned by the significant developmental difficulties that P&W experienced with their F100 during the 1970s. If you’re unfamiliar with that, it’s a valuable historical lesson regarding the value of competition and a competitive industrial base for defense acquisition, though certainly with other “lessons learned” to be drawn from the episode and its impact on future programs.
The celebration continues! Read our Pratt & Whitney article in Aviation Week Network celebrating 50 years of the F-16 and its engine. Very proud of the entire F100 team led by Josh Goodman for all the work they do to keep this jet flying. "We get great feedback on our engine from the pilots who fly the Viper," said Goodman. "It's a pilot's engine. It provides safety and predictability while giving the combat edge." https://lnkd.in/dHRK_dpv

International Partnerships/Collaboration/Joint Ventures. Integrated Support Services. Airworthiness Management. Systems and Sustaining Engineering.
For all my network with UAV interests - (and everyone else involved with type certification)! Very positive news from across the Atlantic. Illustrating just how far collaborative initiatives have evolved ‘across the pond’ . Note that the language is all EASA certification - and yet OCCAR (www.OCCAR.int) is military. Think on the significance of that for EU industry and all their military programs! Huge advantages. Most of the initiatives trace back to the European Defence Agency (EDA) set up in 2004. It helps EU’s - And others - 27 Member States (all EU countries) to develop their military resources. It promotes collaboration, launches new initiatives and introduces solutions to improve defence capabilities. Among those initiatives is the MAWA joint authorities group who publish European Military Airworthiness Requirements (EMAR). OCCAR is pushing this certification confident in the knowledge that the outcome with the civil EASA will be a certification that is true ‘dual use’ and that is transferable with minimal effort (cut and paste) between different militaries. Here in USA - we have no equivalent of EDA and we make our comparative business a bit more ………. Complex? …….Expensive? …… Slower? ……..Confusing? You pick!
First certification activities with EASA started for Eurodrone engine Hallbergmoos, DE - 7th February 2024. The MALE RPAS PD hosted the kick off meeting with EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency to detail the necessary activities to certify the Eurodrone engine. The Eurodrone will integrate the Catalyst engine produced by AVIO AERO, fully ITAR free and produced in Europe, that is planned to receive a full civilian certification released by EASA. At the meeting participated representatives from ADS, Inc. GmbH, as prime contractor, @ADS S.A.U. as engine integrator, AVIO AERO, as engine manufacturer, EASA representatives, as certification authority, the nation’s Certification experts and OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation) staff as contracting authority. During the meeting the major milestones have been highlighted and analysed on the road to release the type certificate of the engine from EASA.
