  • Did you know that the first prototype of the Alouette II - SE 3130 - made its maiden flight on 12 March 1955, almost 70 years ago? In 1955, engineers at the SNCASE (Société nationale des constructions aéronautiques du Sud-Est) Design Office were already thinking about a turbine-powered helicopter.  Experience with previous aircraft had highlighted the mechanical issues that made maintenance too complex and time-consuming. Charles Marchetti, head of the SNCASE Design Office was asked to visit the Turbomeca facility in Bordes (now Safran Helicopter Engines) , where he discovered the 400-hp Artouste II turbine. The Alouette II, the world’s first turbine-powered helicopter to be certified and produced in series, was about to become a reality. After his first flight on 12 March 1955, followed by a level flight at 100 km/h on 14 March, Jean Boulet demonstrated that the future belonged to turbines, a technology which Turbomeca had mastered. In 1957, SNCASE merged with SNCASO to form Sud-Aviation, the foundation for Aérospatiale, Eurocopter and today, Airbus Helicopters. Key dates - 6 June 1955: Jean Boulet broke the world altitude record in his category, reaching 8,209 m - 18 and 19 June 1955: The two prototypes were unveiled at the International Paris Air Show, with one demonstrating its stability and the other its lifting capacity with a 2-hp sling van - January 1956: Series production of the Alouette II was well under way. For the first time in France, more than 100 helicopters were in production - June 1956: The first helicopter rescue at an altitude of over 4,000 m in the Alps - 3 January 1957: Rescue mission of the crew of a Sikorsky S-58 which crashed in the Mont Blanc massif (Vallot refuge) while rescuing mountaineers - 2 May 1957: French certificate of airworthiness issued by the French Civil Aviation Authority (Direction Generale de l'Aviation Civile, DGAC) - 14 January 1958: American certificate of airworthiness issued by the Federal Aviation Administration for the Alouette II - 31 January 1961: New engine with the Astazou II turbine and change of name to SE 3180. 1,326 Alouettes were manufactured in total, 91 of which were still in service in 15 countries at the end of 2024. By the end of this landmark year, the Alouette II fleet had accumulated more than 8.3 million flight hours. #AirbusHelicopters #AirbusHeritage #AlouetteII

The Airbus H140 is here and so is the latest edition of Rotor so you can read all about it. “For those who are passionate about aviation, there is always something exciting about the unveiling of a brand-new aircraft,” says Bruno Even in this edition’s editorial. At the unveiling last week at VERTICON in Dallas, the excitement from the industry crystallised into something special, with more than 74 commitments for the H140. It’s clear that operators are persuaded that the H140 is ideal for their requirements and the reason for such immediate success is that it makes perfect sense to operators – because it was designed in partnership with them. As Even says, “We are confident the H140’s spacious cabin will generate interest from commercial transport operators and from private and business aviation customers around the world and we worked hand in hand with some of the biggest companies delivering HEMS operations to get their feedback and create a product that will make a difference in the most urgent of situations.” Subscribe to Rotor magazine to get an in depth look at the brand-new helicopter and many more stories delivered straight to your inbox this week: https://lnkd.in/gSRNwBkE #AirbusHelicopters #RotorMagazine

Airbus Helicopters wraps up the 2025 edition of VERTICON (formerly HAI HELI-EXPO) with 118 commitments, including 63 firm orders, from customers worldwide for a variety of its multi-mission helicopters. Major highlights included more than 74 commitments for the H140, the new light twin-engined multi-mission helicopter that was unveiled at the show. Emergency medical services will be the first mission to enter into service for the H140. Major HEMS operators in the U.S. and in Europe — Global Medical Response, ADAC Luftrettung, ÖAMTC Flugrettung, Air Methods, STAT MedEvac, Metro Aviation, Inc. and DRF Stiftung Luftrettung gemeinnützige AG — signed orders and letters of intent for the helicopter. “The H140 was designed by customers for customers. Signing with some of the world’s most prominent EMS operators shows that the H140 has hit the mark,” said Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters. “I would like to thank our customers for placing their trust in Airbus. The essential missions they perform with our helicopters is a tremendous source of pride for everyone in the company. VERTICON has proved to be a key moment in the year to connect with our customers and to celebrate what they do,” he added. The H160 has started commercial offshore operations with operator PHI Aviation for Shell after an innovative route-proving programme. Brazilian operator Omni Táxi Aéreo signed a multi-services HCare contract ahead of the start of operations for Petrobras. New York State Police will become the first law enforcement agency in the U.S. to operate the H160 after announcing an order for one H160 and three H145 helicopters. On the Support and Services side, Westair Helicopters signed an HCare contract to support the entry into service of its H225 fleet for offshore energy missions in Namibia. GDAT, one of China’s most prominent helicopter operators, has signed an HCare In-Service contract with Airbus to cover ten H225 helicopters that perform multiple missions such as emergency services and forest protection in the country. Airbus Helicopters also performed demo flights during VERTICON with an H175, H160, H145 and an H125 IFR aircraft using 30% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), underlining the company’s ongoing commitment to use SAF whenever possible. #AirbusHelicopters #MakingMissionsPossible #VERTICON2025

With their versatility and ability to reach remote locations, helicopters play a vital role in firefighting. They can drop water, foam or retardant on or in front of fires to reduce or stop their spread and secure surrounding areas. By airdrop, hoist or rappel, they also provide rapid transport of firefighters to localised areas. #AirbusHelicopters #VERTICON2025 #FireFighting
