What is essential for research institutes to flourish and achieve ground-breaking discoveries? The 15 EU-LIFE alliance members, including BRIC, share 10 principles we deem essential ⬇️ Based on more than 10 years of shared experiences and lessons learned, the EU-LIFE Board of Directors developed a set of common values and aspirations that was published recently in FEBS Letters as the EU-LIFE Charter of Independent Life Science Research Institutes. Our aim is to inspire other #ResearchInstitutes, to encourage critical reflection about the structure and governance of research organisations, to identify room for development, and to set a precedent for new institutes. The charter also evidences that independent research institutes are a fundamental part of the #research and #innovation environment. These principles, detailed in the Charter, encompass: 🌟 Excellence 🔬 Independence 👩🏫 Training, 🌐 Internationality and inclusivity 🎯 Mission focus ⚙️ Technological advancement 📂 Administrative innovation 🤝 Cooperation 🏙 Societal impact 📣 Public engagement If you are interested in details on each principles, we are eager to share more experience. We have decided on our focus for 2024! ✅ PNN has finalized its strategic plan for 2024. In 2023, our focus was on international scholarship PhD candidates, where we delved into their working and living conditions, aiming to improve their experiences in the Netherlands. This year, we are pivoting towards sustainability, with a primary focus on the following: Sustainable PhD Trajectory: We aim to explore the practicality and challenges of completing PhD programs within the designated time frame, considering the responsibilities of candidates, institutions, and supervisors. Visibility and Advocacy: Enhancing PNN's profile among PhD candidates and policymakers, ensuring that the voice of the PhD community is heard and represented effectively. Relationship with Local PhD Organizations (POs): Strengthening ties with POs to better address the diverse needs of the PhD community and enhance collaborative efforts. A truly Golden Triangle for Life Sciences: Following the recent BIO International Convention held this year in San Diego, One Nucleus CEO Tony Jones looks at where the East of England region sits in the world of Life Science business and innovation. Whilst much attention is paid to the UK Golden Triangle of London-Cambridge-Oxford and how to connect it better, Tony suggests that perhaps in a global industry such as this then a more suitable triangle to connect would be Cambridge-Boston/Cambridge-San Diego. He says there are certainly lessons to be shared across these three outstanding Life Science hubs. One Nucleus, through its longstanding collaborations with its peers at MassBio and Biocom California, the Bio Brits in US connections and focused activities such as the 2024 Boston Bootcamp and One Nucleus @ BIO 2024 events is playing its role in increasing the connectivity and knowledge-sharing across this triangle of locations.
