What do deepfakes have to do with hiring? In 2022 an FBI alert warned of “an increase in complaints reporting the use of deepfakes and stolen Personally Identifiable Information (PII) to apply for a variety of remote work and work-at-home positions.” And why might people be doing this? I mean, other than the obvious – namely, that some folks clearly weren’t held enough as babies? In essence, they are doing it in order to be allowed employee-level access to an organization’s proprietary information and digital networks. At a time when a high proportion of jobs are still carried out (and interviewed for) on a remote basis, it’s entirely possible to use deepfakes to gain the full privileges of an employee without ever setting foot inside an office or interacting in person with a colleague.
