Remember how the Federal Maritime Commission and Surface Transportation Board have both kept their hands off policing ocean container demurrage inside rail ramps? A coalition of shippers advising the FMC want clarity rather than each agency pointing the finger to the other, and urge the FMC to apply the demurrage rules inside ports to the rail ramps on door moves. Their argument: if it doesn't pass the smell test inside the port, why should it be permitted inside a rail ramp if it's the same ocean container on a thru bill of lading? Now we are a step closer to a bill in Congress to compel the two agencies to sign an MOU to figure it out, according to Michael Angell.

Latest article from Janet Nodar out today. My contribution was the maths around how many ships could be diverted and what this means for MPV capacity. It's not really rocket science: extra days + extra costs = higher rates. The mitigating factors (for shippers) are that extra capacity in both the container and bulk sectors could provide some cushioning. However the bulkers are also experiencing longer transit times and increased insurance premiums, so it is more likely that charter rates will start to plateau over 1Q24 as the supply demand balance tightens in both sectors. https://lnkd.in/gnt-WiFg

It’s crucial to avoid storing oil in open areas where it can be directly exposed to sunlight and rain. Exposure to these elements can degrade the oil’s quality and lead to contamination. Always store oil in a covered location to protect it from environmental factors. Ideally, the oil should be stored horizontally to prevent water ingress and ensure even distribution of any additives. For added protection, using a plastic barrel cover is highly recommended. These covers provide an extra layer of defense against dust, debris, and moisture, further preserving the oil’s integrity. Additionally, regularly inspect the storage area for any signs of leaks or damage to the containers, and ensure that the storage environment is clean and dry. Proper storage practices will help maintain the oil’s performance and extend its shelf life.
