Royal Marines ‘Bandies’ often get asked, “What’s your day job?”. They may also find themselves answering other popular questions such as, “Is being in the Royal Marines Band Service voluntary?” As Beating Retreat draws nearer, audiences are excited as ever to see The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines perform on Horse Guards Parade. The band has always played a crucial role in the military, providing musical support to phase one training, through to freedom parades, remembrance parades and state ceremonial events, ensuring that music is an integral and valued part of military identity. However, there are numerous misconceptions about the life of a Royal Marines Bandy and the unique life they lead. A common misconception is that members of the Royal Marines Band Service do not work in the band full-time, and therefore must have a ‘day job’ on the side. This is untrue – their role within the band is their full-time career. Bandies are regular service Royal Marines the same way that Commandos are – not reservists or cadets. Musicians and Buglers are fully trained and operational military personnel. Last year, three different Royal Marines Bands were involved in various exercises and deployments. https://lnkd.in/eKJ6F4wi #armedforcescommunity Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity

Counselor & Advisor for Global Strategies. Incubator of ideas and a track record of implementing them. Conventional wisdom rarely accepted.
This year marks the 360th anniversary of the creation of The Band of the HM Royal Marines (aka “The Blue Band”) created by the order of King Charles II in 1644. You can imagine that recounting hundreds of years of history and tying all of it into an inspirational and aspirational promotion video would be a big challenge. So did this storied organization turn to Hollywood? Did they employ Saatchi & Saatchi? (the creators of the TEMU super bowl videos). Did they task some internal executive earning seven figures to lead the project? After all, storytelling is an art — and yes, even a science. So in this case, you needed someone even more talented with greater understanding of the majesty and history of such an iconic organization. Someone with keen insights and creative vision. Someone who had the perspective that Hollywood, giant PR/creative agencies and big shot executives lacked. Who possessed these unique capabilities? The answer was obvious: A Corporal. In this case, an exceptionally talented Royal Marine Band Corporal, James Dunlop. Two decades ago, my Hollywood producer brother, David A. Neuman told me that back then, the technology of the iPhone and iMac gave every kid, (back then) on a desktop and in their pocket, equipment that would have cost up to one-half million dollars when we were kids in High School. _______________________ On a side note, I had the great honor of being the patron of An Evening to Salute Military Service at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in February of 2016. The Band of Royal Marines headlined the program and they delivered wonderful performance for an audience of over 1,000 guests, including a large contingent of Midshipmen from the University of Illinois Naval ROTC Battalion. I hosted the Band’s senior enlisted leaders the day after their performance, showing them around the campus of my beloved Alma Mater the following day. It was an experience that I remember with great fondness. ______________________ I would bet that this video (certainly a superb recruitment tool for the @RoyalMarinesBandService ) cost about one-quarter of what a big US company would spend on a decent holiday video. And it was way better — with far more historical and emotional content. So I share a terrific video history of the Band of the Royal Marines, played with a beautiful live-performance accompaniment from the Mountbatten Festival at Royal Albert Hall in 2022. Bravo Zulu BdCpl James Dunlop! Hope the Palace takes notice. Perhaps the Corporal deserves a MBE for this.

Today holds a special place in our hearts. We will take time today for reflection, gratitude, and a collective commitment to never forget the sacrifices of those who served in the military. We honour the sacrifices of Canadian military personnel that have served for our country. ♡ ~ Will Good

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗽: 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆" Every year, I see a common communication mistake that makes me cringe: people and businesses saying "Happy Memorial Day" or promoting "Happy Memorial Day sales." Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring and mourning U.S. military personnel who died in service to our country. For those remembering and mourning fallen heroes, "Happy Memorial Day" can feel out of place and insensitive. Instead, consider using more appropriate phrases such as: "Wishing you a meaningful Memorial Day" "Honoring our fallen heroes this Memorial Day" "Remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice" By choosing your words carefully, you show respect and understanding for the true significance of this solemn day. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 If you're promoting a sale, focus on the event without using the phrase "Happy Memorial Day." Here are some examples: "Memorial Day Weekend Sale: Honoring Our Heroes with Special Discounts" "Memorial Day Sale: Great Deals This Weekend" "Commemorate Memorial Day with Our Exclusive Offers" This approach allows you to acknowledge the significance of the holiday while promoting your sale respectfully. Let's honor their memory appropriately. #CommunicationTips #MemorialDay #Respect #HonoringOurHeroes #MarketingTips #smithmarketinggroup

Freedom isn’t free
“Freedom isn’t free” is a simple phrase but it is hard to find a more accurate way to express the meaning of Memorial Day. Observed on the last Monday of May in the U.S., and also acknowledged similarly in many other countries, this is a day to remember and appreciate military service members who gave their lives to protect and uphold the freedoms that so many enjoy. The Memorial Day holiday ensures that the enormity of that sacrifice – affecting children, parents, siblings and friends – won’t be forgotten. Although the long holiday weekend also has become synonymous with the start of summer in the U.S., punctuated by barbecues, social festivities and travel, I hope that you will join me in recognizing that these privileges might not be possible without those who sacrificed their lives in service to our nation. As we reflect on the importance and history of Memorial Day, I’d like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.

In this conversation, Lt Gen Anil Malik( Veteran) who had a nearly four-decade career in the Indian military, talks to Hindol Sengupta about, - why the Chief of Army Staff was given an unconventional extension, - why the introduction of the position of Chief of Defence Staff position has been transformative, - the plan to create theatre commands in the Indian armed forces and why it will be a game-changer, - what the controversy of the Agniveer scheme of inducting recruits into the Indian armed forces is all about, - and impact of weapons manufacturing indigenisation in the armed forces. https://lnkd.in/g5mgsRNb

« He who knows only England does not know England." - Rudyard Kipling I particularly appreciate a small reflective ingredient at the heart of one of our exercises: comparing ourselves to the organization of the Marines (USA military corps). Especially ☝️ when the participants' culture, a priori, is far from a particular interest in the military… This is where the exercise becomes most enriching. What do we do? We quickly learn things about the organization of the Marines, either in depth or at a glance, or by filtering what suits us to say things that we would find more difficult or less clear to express without the pretext of these learnings about Marines. **How are we like the Marines? **How are we not like the Marines? **How would we like to be like the Marines? **How would we not like to be like the Marines? This concerns only a subgroup among others, but the feedback in the plenary session is always very interesting. (Spoiler alert: it almost never talks about the Marines anymore, and when the Marines are mentioned, it is to say something more easily by attributing it to the Marines.) This general module, in which we use this gem, is found in many of our customized session agendas. And we also have a pleasant and motivating (non-challenging) version in one of the exercises of REGROUP, our well-done team building.

Continued successful business operation is reliant on the virtue and integrity of the worker at every level of the operation. One only need look to the Gaza Strip or Haiti to comprehend what happens when positive virtue and lack of integrity crush the social construct. One only need recall the riots in the summer of 2020. There are too many in our country who are actually promoting that we as a nation are in decline. It appears an attempt to convince the general population that this is true. However, I read reviews such as this, I look at the support that Mr. Trump has, I look at what the leading podcasts are, and I know that there is a firm foundation for Duty, Honor, and Service in our nation. The challenge must be for those of us who agree with these virtues and the assessment of what is being 'sold' to continue to teach the virtues emphasized in the article below, maybe more earnestly than in the past. We used to be able to rely on school systems to do so, and on our youth programs (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, youth entrepreneur programs) but no longer. It falls to 'the faithful' to shore up what is missing. It is not difficult for a manager to arrange such within their circle(s) of influence. Posters, icons, statues of honor have been removed from public parks. We can still 'raise' them within our work places, discuss their need in our daily practice with our teams, and compliment their use in those annual evaluations. How easy is it to let employees and associates know that to be a 'top performer' means to exhibit such virtues in practice? The alternative is to allow what the pundits say to become the reality, to let those promoting a different and destructive form of selfishness overtake the selfless service that is the ideal to work towards to maintain the necessary social order for business and personal successes. This is what is meant by the phrase "Make America Great Again". It may be a political 'catch phrase', but the virtues and integrity behind it are what more than 72 million voters stood for a few years back.

More on Duty, Honor, and Country .... Although not a graduate of West Point but a thirty-four-year member of the Profession of Arms and a graduate of the United States Army War College, I find the recent sleight of hand disturbing for a number of reasons. All of the branches our military, be they the Army, The Navy, the Marine Corps, and the Air Force are built on bedrock ideals that stand the test of time and serve as their north star, especially during armed combat. The Marine Corps whose motto “Semper Fidelis” Always Faithful has never wavered from its roots and consequently has not experienced the recruiting issues some of our more progressive military service are suffering from today. Duty, Honor, Country | Douglas MacArthur | May 12, 1962 | West Point - YouTube Today I went back and listened to GEN McArthur’s entire speech given in 1962 and it is indeed prophetic. It was if he could see the handwriting on the wall. “ Duty, honor, country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. …The unbelievers will say they are but words, but a slogan, but a flamboyant phrase. Every pedant, every demagogue, every cynic, every hypocrite, every troublemaker, and I am sorry to say, some others of an entirely different character, will try to downgrade them even to the extent of mockery and ridicule.” In addition, in this farewell speech to the Corps of Cadets MacArthur prophetically warned us to be wary of the expansion of the Federal bureaucracy, our nation’s ever-increasing debt, and many of the other issues that are currently thwarting our leadership of the free world. I suspect while fighting against the Chinese in Korea he saw the eventual rise of the Peoples Republic of China and its goal of world hegemony. So yes, GEN McCarthur you were correct over sixty years ago. We appear to now be a nation that unfortunately reviles its past and has lost its way and is on the precipice of decline. Perhaps we should have listened to your wisdom and clairvoyance more intently on The Plain of West Point. Scott Duncan 🇺🇸📜 (MPA) Randy Doyle

I posted a short last week joking about getting out of the military & this article highlights what my underlying point was. Transition from military service even after just a few years can be rough & many service members struggle with finding their place in the civi world. In the military your life is extremely regimented, you know what to do & where to be every hour of the day, and of course there's the pride in yourself. Then one day you're set free & left to deal with the chaos that is every day society. Trucking is a perfect career for veterans in my opinion & definitely worth a look at as a post military career. https://lnkd.in/gCfNc_6J
