Let's talk about the Spectrum outage yesterday. It was personally very annoying to me as I am stuck at home after a positive COVID test. This meant that I didn't have the option to go into the office or find a coffee shop with a working connection (though most of the ones in Austin didn't have one yesterday). The reports in the news are that a "tower" went down. Through the grapevine I've heard that they had a generation and/or cooling issue at a data center in Houston. While recovery from a natural disaster is tough and I am sure the folks at that data center were doing the best that they could under the circumstances, this issue exposes a huge problem with Spectrum's infrastructure. If they're that reliant on a single data center then they've just publicized an attack vector should a bad actor want to disrupt service to all of Texas. What if there had been major damage to that data center from a tornado? Would we have been without internet for weeks or months? When building critical infrastructure, there needs to be redundancy. The loss of a single building should not be able to cause a state-wide outage to a critical service like internet. If we lived in a normal, functioning state, the legislature would hold hearings and demand that Spectrum add redundancy to their systems, but alas, we live in Texas where we're allergic to regulation even when it could save lives. While my neighborhood will be getting Google Fiber soon and I have more faith in Google than I do in Spectrum to not have a single point of failure for the entire state, I cannot be sure unless they let me audit their network architecture. The long and short of this is: 1) Critical infrastructure needs to be built with redundancy 2) Regulation needs to be in place to ensure that #1 is done #spectrum #redundancy

Congestion control Congestion control is a technique that prevents or reduces congestion in a network. Congestion occurs when the demand for network resources exceeds the available capacity, resulting in packet loss, delay, and reduced throughput. Congestion control algorithms try to balance the traffic load and the network capacity, by adjusting the rate of data transmission or the amount of data in transit. This text will explain some of the methods and benefits of congestion control. One of the methods of congestion control is TCP congestion control, which regulates the amount of data that a TCP sender can transmit on a connection, based on the feedback from the receiver and the network. TCP uses mechanisms such as slow start, congestion avoidance, fast retransmit, and fast recovery to dynamically adjust the size of the congestion window, which limits the number of unacknowledged packets that can be in flight. TCP also uses additive increase/multiplicative decrease (AIMD) to increase or decrease the congestion window in response to network conditions. TCP congestion control can improve the reliability and efficiency of data transfer over TCP connections. Another method of congestion control is traffic shaping, which smoothes out bursty traffic into a more predictable stream. Traffic shaping algorithms use buffers or tokens to limit the output rate or the burst size of traffic. Two examples of traffic shaping algorithms are leaky bucket and token bucket, which use different metaphors to illustrate how they work. Leaky bucket uses a bucket with a small hole at the bottom, which leaks water at a constant rate. Incoming packets are thrown into the bucket, and are transmitted at the rate of the leak. If the bucket is full, any additional packets are discarded. Token bucket uses a bucket that holds tokens, which are generated at a constant rate. Each token represents a permission to send a packet of a certain size. A sender can only transmit a packet if it has enough tokens in the bucket, otherwise it has to wait until more tokens are generated. Traffic shaping can prevent congestion by ensuring that the output rate does not exceed a predefined limit. Congestion control is an important technique that can enhance the performance and quality of service of a network. By using different algorithms, such as TCP congestion control and traffic shaping, congestion control can avoid or mitigate packet loss, delay, and reduced throughput caused by congestion. Congestion control can also improve the fairness and stability of network resource allocation among different users and applications. #networkadministration #congestion #networkinfrastructure

Providing useful power solutions focused on power distribution, redundancy and power path security for mission critical applications in the Data Center, Networking, Controls / PLC and Industrial space #DannyLatzer
After the largest IT outage in history, the Uptime Institute is shedding light on the most common causes of Data Center outages – still primarily power and cooling issues. To mitigate against future disruptions, the key lies in redundancy. Redundancy, redundancy and more redundancy appear to be the mantra for those safeguarding critical IT infrastructures. ZONIT's Department of Redundancy Department (along with several flavors of Zonit's ATS offerings), provides "cut and paste" redundancy solutions for mission critical IT hardware and automated controls. #redundancy #zonit #uptime #availability

🌐 Building Resilient Systems: The Pillars of Resilience Engineering 🌐 In our journey through Resilience Engineering, we're diving deeper into the core pillars that make systems resilient. From redundancy to adaptive capacity, these principles are shaping a safer, more secure future. Redundancy ensures that essential systems, such as power and cooling, have backup solutions, minimizing the risk of catastrophic failures. A good example is the modern data center that goes a step further by integrating adaptive capacity, allowing these systems to dynamically adjust to changing conditions, optimizing their response based on real-time data. This not only enhances reliability but also maximizes energy efficiency, ultimately resulting in a safer and more sustainable data center operation. Join us as we uncover the secrets of creating systems that can withstand the unexpected. Ready to embrace resilience? 🚀 #ResilienceEngineering #SafetySystems #AdaptiveCapacity #LinkedInPost

The pressure for higher efficiency is ever present and driven by multiple sources. The most critical is stringent government regulations. These can be the most crucial as you can incur penalties, and they can be significant. For example, in some locations in EMEA you must collect waste heat for use by the municipality. The next most pressing driver is SLA agreements imposed by Colocation customers. These customers are typically trying to reduce their carbon footprint or meet an overall efficiency goal anywhere they have a presence. Failure to comply can result in loss of business contracts. Beyond this, internal motivations (reducing overhead) will drive towards greater efficiency. And, of course, just being a good neighbor and reducing impact on the environment!
