CockroachDB kind of sells itself as its magic. It lets you scale and it doesn't go down. But it's not magic. It's just really good engineering. My name is Bryan Call and I'm a senior principal engineer at Route. One of the fun things for me about Route is that we have kind of a dual customer focus. We have a consumer app where we're dealing with millions of consumers every month and have to be able to support their use case. And then we also have merchants and brands who are also our customers that we partner with, and we have to meet their needs, which provides for some interesting challenges as we have to be able to deal with data from each of those unique perspectives. One of the unique challenges when you're working with consumer apps is, you know, they'll expect everything to be instantaneous on our phones, we're not very tolerant of mobile apps having loading icons or taking very long. And so Route has to be able to respond with low latency, answers to the data questions that our users are asking us. We also have to deal with the reality that we're in the e-commerce space, and it's very easy to lose a customer during an online purchase process if things don't go well. Our system has to be up, and our system has to respond quickly because we're not providing a great experience for the consumers who use our app and we're not providing a great experience to the merchants and brands who have entrusted us with their customers. if we aren't responding quickly and with low latency. When Route decided they wanted to start breaking up the initial monolith. Every company starts with a monolith, they knew they needed to be able to scale all our order and shipment and, tracking data was going to to get huge. And we need to be able to scale that separately. And as they looked at, how are we going to pull that out of this initial monolithic Postgres database we have? They didn't want to go with a solution that would require us to do a lot of complexity of the app layer to shard ourselves. We wanted to find something that would scale with us, and that was why CockroachDB was selected. So the use case for us, for CockroachDB is it is our central, physical and logical place where we store that data to power both our consumer mobile app as well as our post-purchase experience for our merchants. One of the things that I love about CockroachDB is, and I think it comes from the name, right? You've got all these cockroaches and you can step on any one and it may survive. And that works for us. I can have all these different components fail, and we've gone through them both in exercises and control scenarios and in the actual real world hardware failures. And the cluster doesn't go down. Cockroach gives you another perspective. That's not strictly SQL and it's not strictly NoSQL. It's kind of this next generation and helps us solve a lot of these challenges that that we've been facing for years.
