🎓 Reflecting on My First Year Post-College: As I mark one year since graduating and six months into my role as a Marketing Associate at Digiday. Here are some lessons I’ve learned that might resonate with others navigating the early stages of their careers: 1. Embrace Mistakes as Learning Opportunities 🌟 I’ve always strived for perfection and dreaded making mistakes, but I’ve come to realize that mistakes are an essential part of growth. It's inevitable, and often the fastest way to learn. 2. Finding the Right Job Takes Time ⏳ It took me six months to find a role that felt like the right fit. I’ve learned that it’s okay to be selective and hold out for opportunities that align with your goals and values. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve found at Digiday and the alignment it has brought to my career aspirations. 3. Remote Work Can Foster Strong Connections 🌐 Working remotely can sometimes feel isolating, but it doesn’t have to be. I’m fortunate to be part of a team where everyone is incredibly kind and welcoming. Our HR team (aka Andrea Sontz) works hard to keep us connected through monthly calls, weekly icebreaker chats, and other initiatives. Finding the right company and people can make remote work a fulfilling and engaging experience. 4. Ask Questions 🤔 Don’t hesitate to ask questions—there’s no such thing as a dumb question. You’re surrounded by experienced people who have valuable insights to share. Seeking clarity not only helps you do your job better but also shows your eagerness to learn and grow. 5. Celebrate Small Wins 🏆 Amidst the daily tasks, it’s easy to overlook small victories. At Digiday, we use Nectar to recognize and celebrate achievements. FROM OVERWHELM TO OVERCOMING : A Journey of Grit and Growth My ALX journey started strong. Every day, I'd study new topics while also documenting my progress to stay consistent. If you scroll through my page, you will find my documentation starting from Day 1 of my #LifeAtALX. Weeks 1 to 4 seemed promising as everything went according to plan. It was so exciting, and I looked forward to completing each day gracefully. But then, Week 5 hit. The workload piled up, and the intensity of the course grew, but my determination kept me going. After all, I had already landed two interviews because recruiters were finding me. This must be the right career path for me, right? Week 6 was a different story. I struggled to keep up, feeling overwhelmed. It was like hitting a wall. I started having issues completing my tasks ahead of time like I used to. You know how they tell you that every course you take in your first year is child's play compared to your final year? Well, I experienced that. Every time I picked up my phone to continue my documentation, I felt blocked, unable to pen down my learnings. Week 7 brought a new challenge: volunteering. I was exhausted, and my teething baby needed me. I felt like giving up. I found myself scrolling through my feed, admiring others who were still showing up. I questioned if simply sharing my struggles was enough. But then, I came online and got this beautiful feedback on a task I completed during my volunteering project. It was a huge boost. It reminded me why I started this journey. Here I am today, reintroducing myself in case you're seeing my post for the first time. Next time someone asks you if your organization offers career paths, instead of answering no (because you're thinking only of vertical ones), pause. Only 28.8% of people want the traditional vertical paths. Most of your people are interested in growing through interesting projects. So, I'm throwing out a challenge. Rethink career pathways.
