Every student is a digital citizen, yet one pioneering teacher at Baldi C C A Middle School in Philadelphia, PA, is taking it a step further by guiding her students to be responsible digital citizens. Jackie Mandel, a Middle School teacher at Baldi, puts it simply: "BSD Education isn't just coding. It's about thinking bigger, creating more, and never giving up." There was a Friday in JSS1 when my English teacher posed a simple but thought-provoking question: "How many times do you have to fail before you pass?" We all raised our hands, eager to answer. Ideas flew from every corner, typical of JSS1 students. Some said once, others said twice or thrice. Our teacher, however, had a different take. In her gentle voice, she said, "You don't necessarily have to fail before you pass." Curious, I asked, "Then how do you learn if you don't fail?" She explained that the best way to learn is from others' failures. By learning from where others stumbled, we gain an advantage. The challenge, she said, lies in actually learning from others' mistakes. We humans, let's face it, are a bit like blind mice (sorry, no offense!). We have this weird urge to bump into walls ourselves, even if we know someone else already got a nasty head injury doing the same thing. We crave that "Oh, at least I'm not the first!" consolation prize. Failure becomes a badge of honor, a story to tell. That's the human condition, I guess. If you haven't experienced failure, consider yourself lucky. I know failure intimately – I could show you the scars. The wounds may heal, but the marks remain. If you've failed multiple times like me, don't beat yourself up. Nobody came into this world with an instruction manual. We learn mostly through trial and error. So, keep going. You'll pass eventually. That's just how life works. Have a lovely weekend!

#MalaysiaEducation: #3MSkills Originally, primary school especially stardard 1 till 3 intention was to teach #3M (Membaca, Mengira & Menulis) About 5.65% of pupils who are in Primary 2 till 6, are still unable to master the basic literacy skills of reading, writing and counting according to #EducationMinister recently. With staggering 280,985 pupils (from Primary 1 to 6) still struggle with mastering the Bahasa Melayu subject. Also 154,853 secondary school students (Form 1 to Form 5) have not mastered the 3M skills, bringing the total of students facing learning difficulties up to 435,838. As such, it is not surprising that many of them fail to catch up with the national school syllabus and eventually drop out from school. To support this aresearch by Taylor’s University School of Education has shown that children who aren’t able to read according to their respective grade levels (e.g., Primary 5 in the Malaysian context) are more likely to drop out of school as low proficiency in reading. As reading is basic/fundamental, such children can’t use their reading skills to excel in other subjects. Malaysia needs to focus back on the basic literacy skills of reading, writing and counting (3M). Not all students entering the first year of primary school are proficient in 3M. There are many students who actually still do not master 3M at the beginning of their schooling. Understand that there are still many students who do not go to pre-school. There are students from poor families whose parents cannot afford to help their children study at home. There are also students who are faced with the issue of 'slowness/learning problems'. This is all necessary for an effective rehabilitation program. That's why our education system has had special rehabilitation teachers for a long time to help students like this master 3M at the earliest level (at Primary 1) The task of special rehabilitation teachers is very important to reduce the dropout rate. With introduction of #HigherOrderThinkingSkills (#HOTS) or in Malay "#KemahiranBerfikirArasTinggi (#KBAT)" the ability to read and to comprehend the reading is generally considered thinking and involves “reading the lines” and “reading between the lines.” to solve the question. The inability to cope with academic and learning pressure is a reason for children to withdraw from school. Students are weak in mastering the 3M components in the teaching and learning process. Students will feel inferior and cannot develop their potential. It has an impact on the formation of children's personality. Therefore, we need to provide opportunities for children to reach their optimal potential through education. Actions to prevent educational dropouts need to be done comprehensively through empowerment, cooperation and commitment from all parties.

Mistakes are our learning friends! Especially funny ones! And I am sure my student will always get this one right. In a recent lesson with one of my students, we were reviewing what he has just learned in school that day. It was a social studies topic. The topic of the day was about the Singapore flag and the Singapore crest. As part of the lesson plan was to strengthen his reading, we took the opportunity to practice his reading skills by reading the above stated topics in his school textbook. When he reached the section about the crest. My dear student read aloud with confidence, deep focus and in all seriousness that our national crest is known as the national goat of arms!😅 Of Course I did a double take and asked “Did you just say ‘goat’ of arms?” “Our country’s National crest is what of arms?” “Did you just said ‘meh meh’ goat?” You can imagine the guffawing that followed. The ‘mistake’ created an effective vocabulary lesson for the word ‘coat’ and how in this case is not an outer jacket but a heraldic symbol. We had a good laugh but that lesson on and forever more, I am absolutely certain my student will never forget that The Singapore National Crest is also known as The National COAT of arms. This delightful story illustrates how mistakes, even humorous ones, can be powerful tools for learning. The student's mix-up with "goat of arms" not only provided a good laugh but also became a memorable lesson on vocabulary, emphasizing the importance of making errors as an integral part of the learning process, particularly for students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD). Embracing and learning from mistakes fosters resilience and deepens understanding. Consider joining The Yarn Spinners—let us become a part of your child’s engaging learning journey and discovery. MABE endorses a YES vote on Massachusetts Ballot Question 2, which would eliminate the MCAS graduation requirement. Assessment of multilingual learners must be holistic and multifaceted, not reduced to a single standardized test score. Too many bilingual students are being held back from graduating based on a test that does not accurately reflect their capabilities in multiple languages. Accountability is essential for schools serving multilingual learners, but our current high-stakes accountability system fails students and families who come from rich and diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Let’s work together to support schools by expanding bilingual programming, diversifying the teacher pipeline to end the bilingual teacher shortage, and providing much-needed professional and technical assistance for the specific needs of bilingual programs. Ending the MCAS graduation requirement is a step towards educational equity for multilingual learners. Vote YES on Question 2 on November 5, 2024 and learn more about this issue here: https://lnkd.in/e_RHXvRW.

Challenged my KG students with a fun comprehension activity! 🙌 They read simple sentences like "The cat wears a hat" and they have a picture of the cat without the hat. The students have to draw the missing hat themselves. It was amazing to see their creativity and interpretation skills in action! 🎨 This type of comprehension exercise is a great way to get young learners engaged. #pyp #ibeducation #pyp3

This week, I shared with RPPL a few key opportunities I believe we have to collectively close the professional learning gap for multilingual learners. Here are the shifts I proposed: 1. From only training English Language Development professionals segregated from content teachers…To ensuring all educators are trained in the fundamentals of language development (content and ELD teachers are trained together.) 2. From a small group of ELD professionals carrying the burden to train all teachers...To collective responsibility and shared accountability shared by all system leaders. Some of us are on the hook for more, but everyone is on the hook for something. 3. From a narrow focus on ELD assessments, standards, and frameworks...To professional learning that integrates ELD simultaneously within core content curriculum-based professional learning. 4. From only training teachers …To training all system leaders to learn how to lead the change for multilingual learner success. What do you think? I'll be sharing. more about these shifts with my team at the upcoming ELSF convening.
This month’s Brown Bag Lunch on centering multilingual learners in high-quality professional learning was led by the English Learners Success Forum! We delved into how PL for multilingual learners has evolved, explored emerging trends, and discussed ways to enhance educator capacity. Thank you, ELSF!

How to decide if YOU should JOIN the Indian Competitive Programming Summer Camp? Check if any of these 3 conditions is true: - You are less than 1400 rated on CF. - You think your Ad-hoc, Greedy, Constructive Skills need improvement! - You want to make most out of the summers in terms of rating growth in CF in a structured manner. Most students come to me in their 3rd/4th year asking for these ... only to realise that a beautiful time to grow in the summers is gone! Talk to a good senior to decide if this would be a worthwhile investment in summers and they will surely say so! Pre registration are open from the first link in the comments. #competitiveprogramming #dsa #icpsc
