Be curious, especially when you experience surprise, discomfort, or frustration. When we leap to an assumption, we miss the opportunity to use curiosity to understand what is really going on. Instead, catch yourself when the assumption forms in your mind and instead ask some questions to test the assumption. When someone shares something that is hard to hear and to digest, choose curiosity and ask some questions to understand more clearly what is being communicated. If someone tells you that something you did caused harm, choose curiosity over defensiveness, avoidance, or blame. It is hard to do but it is worth it.
