"It has now been over 1000 days since they banned girls from attending school beyond the sixth grade, making Afghanistan the only country in the world with such restrictions and making it the only country in the world that takes away the inalienable right to education only to girls, ripping away their most powerful tool. The new “morality law” is deeply concerning as it is completely erasing women from public life, not allowing them to sing, speak, or expose faces." Yasmina Benslimane writes a powerful statement on the urgent need to recognise gender apartheid in Afghanistan. Read the statement here: https://lnkd.in/djaPWaSi

Today, together we can learn about and support the movement to make gender apartheid a crime against humanity. "We should not be living in a world where we are accepting a ban on girls education, where we are accepting it as normal. This cannot be excused," Malala Yousafzai is among the key signatories of the End Gender Apartheid global campaign, all working to criminalise gender apartheid as a crime against humanity. 📣 #EndGenderApartheid 📸 Join the voice against https://lnkd.in/gzDscBjQ 📽 7 Dec 2023 Malala Yousafzai speaks about this https://lnkd.in/gCY8UHpW On October 26, the Afghanistan's Minister for Virtue and Vice declared it forbidden for adult women to speak to other adult women. This ban on women's voices, even if it's performing or reciting religious verses such as Ayahs of the Quran, is the latest in a series of draconian laws passed by the ruling political party in their deliberate, systematic oppression of the women and girls of Afghanistan. This treatment has a name: gender apartheid. On, October 11, the International Day of the Girl, the world marked 1,120 days since the girls of Afghanistan have been banned from education beyond the sixth grade. Today, over 1.5 million girls remain deprived of their fundamental right to learn and grow. The Afghanistan's legally enshrined systematic discrimination and dehumanisation of women and girls constitutes nothing less than gender apartheid. As the world observes this day, we must amplify the voices of the girls of Afghanistan and continue to demand their right to education equality, and dignity. #KindnessMatters #HumanRights #WomensHealth #WomensSafety UN Women Australia

📰 Addressing Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan: A Call to Action In Afghanistan, the systemic and institutionalized discrimination against women and girls continues to escalate. This gender apartheid not only violates fundamental human rights but also stifles the country's potential for growth and development. Women and girls are being denied education, employment, and the basic freedoms necessary for a dignified life. The policies enforced by the regime are not only oppressive but also a direct contravention of international human rights laws and norms. 📢 As a Legal Investigator at the International Commission of Jurists and a dedicated advocate for women's rights, I am urging the international community, policymakers, and civil society organizations to: 1. Amplify Voices: Ensure the stories and struggles of Afghan women and girls are heard globally. 2. Impose Sanctions: Implement targeted sanctions against those perpetuating and enforcing these discriminatory policies. 3. Support NGOs: Provide robust support to NGOs and grassroots organizations working tirelessly to protect and empower Afghan women. 4. Foster Education: Advocate for and support initiatives that provide remote and safe educational opportunities for Afghan girls. 5. Promote Accountability: Hold the Afghan regime accountable through international legal mechanisms and pressure. We must act collectively and decisively to dismantle gender apartheid in Afghanistan. Every woman and girl deserves the right to live in freedom and equality, and it is our responsibility to stand with them in solidarity and action. 💪 Together, we can make a difference. #GenderApartheid #Afghanistan #HumanRights #WomenEmpowerment #Equality #InternationalLaw #ICJ

Now as always it is the women & girls of Afghanistan who pay the disproportionate price for the folly & misadventures of Afghanistan’s leaders & the foreign powers who manipulate them. And now as always it is the critical voices of Afghan women who are excluded from the discussions & negotiations that determine their futures and their families’. @UNWomen has no greater purpose & responsibility than to ensure that women are guaranteed voice and agency and are included in the processes and decisions that determine their future. The voices Afghan women & civil society must be included in #Doha3

The Taliban's rule over the past three years has indeed been devastating for Afghanistan, particularly for women and girls. The denial of education to females at all levels has created a generational gap in knowledge and skills that will have long-lasting consequences. The absence of new high school graduates, medical professionals, and other educated individuals threatens the country's future development and healthcare system. The confinement of women to their homes and the stripping away of their rights represent a severe human rights violation and a significant step backwards for gender equality. This not only affects women individually but also impacts families, communities, and the entire nation's social and economic fabric. The international community must continue to pressure the Taliban regime to restore women's rights and access to education. Supporting underground education initiatives, advocating for change, and providing humanitarian aid are crucial steps. Ultimately, sustainable progress in Afghanistan requires the full participation and empowerment of all its citizens, regardless of gender. #womensrights #genderequality #womenssecurity #democraticparticipation #genderbasedviolence #discrimination #digitalgenderdivide #education #awarenessraising #legalframeworks #politicalparticipation #representation #womenledorganizations #menandboys #internationalcooperation #collaboration #independenceofthejudiciary #ruleoflaw #judicialindependence #separationofpowers #humanrights #democracy #justice #integrity #accountability #witnessprotection #witnesssafety #justice #ruleoflaw #democracy #retaliation #intimidation #violence #safety #support #nonprofit U.S. Department of State European Commission UK Parliament United Nations

The campaign has been launched by a group of women rights activists, for the purpose of having the term “gender apartheid” criminalised in international conventions. I’m delighted to be a member of this campaign. Throughout history, Afghan and Iranian women have been subjected to brutal human rights violations. They have been discriminated against in numerous ways. The deplorable situation of women in both countries, particularly in Afghanistan, where women and girls are denied their most basic rights, such as accessing an education, appearing in public life, employment and so on, necessitates the development of an international toolkit to hold the perpetrators accountable. The gravity of the oppression and restrictions imposed on women in both countries, requires international responses, as existing international laws and conventions that can define the extent of these atrocities are inadequate. As a result, the atrocities must be recognised as crimes against humanity and the term “gender apartheid” must be incorporated into international conventions. #unitedagainstgenderapartheid #endgenderapartheid
