Special education advocates have filed a new state complaint against Chicago Public Schools (CPS), urging the Illinois State Board of Education to intervene over ongoing transportation issues. For four consecutive years, CPS has struggled to provide reliable bus services for students with disabilities, a requirement under their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The complaint, spearheaded by advocates Miriam Bhimani and Terri Smith, highlights a systemic failure to meet legal obligations, potentially denying students a free appropriate public education as guaranteed by federal law. To learn more about the challenges and the actions proposed by the state, read the full article here: [https://buff.ly/4gcBh73 ] #SpecialEducation #EducationEquity #ChicagoPublicSchools #StudentTransportation #IEP

The only school systems to have desegregation lawsuits in the state of Missouri are KC and STL. The only school systems, until recently, with charter schools are KC and STL. I am neutral on charters as a concept, but the fiscal and educative measurements, requirements, and accountability standards should be no less stringent than in public schools. We cannot improve schools and student outcomes by adding systems that play by different rules. https://lnkd.in/emrCreuj

Barton Gilman has secured a landmark funding win for the Frederick County Charter Schools. Patricia Hennessy, co-chair of the firm’s Education Law Group, and Kathleen Nagle worked collaboratively with the Maryland Alliance of Public Charter Schools to secure the historic victory. The decision, which was issued by the Maryland State Board of Education, resolves funding inequities and requires that Frederick County Public Schools return unrightfully withheld funds and comply with the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future and charter school funding formulas. The ruling sets a precedent for all Maryland School local school systems with public charter schools, affirming that nearly 25,000 public charter school students receive their fair share of funding while supporting the costs of districtwide special education. Project 2025 devotes over 40 pages to laying out an agenda for public education that focuses on eliminating the federal Department of Education, reducing oversight of federal education funds and expanding school choice. The agenda is of particular relevance to Oklahoma given the close ties between the authors of Project 2025 and State Superintendent Ryan Walters. "Overall, the agenda is one in which the federal government’s decades-long role in shaping education policy, which has been guided by the objectives of protecting rights and expanding opportunity for all students, is dramatically narrowed or eliminated. It is up to defenders of robust, inclusive, and effective public schools to recognize the threat and fight back.
