It’s a belief that women (everyone really, but for the sake of today let’s keep this about us) are more than workers. Empowering women in the workplace is not a one-size-fits-all endeavour; it encompasses a variety of approaches, each with its own level of success and impact. To ensure that initiatives aimed at empowering women yield meaningful results, it's crucial to establish clear objectives, define the desired impact, and align these efforts with the organisation's overall strategy. This distinction between a mere tactic (tickbox exercise) and a strategic initiative lies in the clarity of purpose and alignment with broader goals. So, how can organisations effectively empower women in the workplace? Firstly, it's essential to clearly understand what an empowered workplace for women looks like. Recognizing the complexity of gender intersectionality, women are not a monolith and this must be recognised if there is to be true gender equity for all women. Attention must be paid to various areas such as hiring practices, equitable development opportunities, and ensuring fair compensation. Once this vision is established, data becomes a valuable tool for assessing the current landscape and identifying areas for improvement. This year’s International Women’s Day #iwd2024 theme is “Inspire Inclusion” and a subject which is very close to my heart ❤️ But let’s just first understand what does Inpsire Inclusion mean to each of us? - What does it mean to a working woman? - What does it mean to a home maker? - What does it mean to a newly joining recruit at a company? - What does it mean to a senior citizen? - What does it mean to a employer / entrepreneur? - What does it mean to a child? What does it truly mean? The reason I ask these questions is because I know that the interpretation of “Inclusion” is different for different people. - For a home-maker, getting her involved in financial decisions of the house is inclusion. - For a new joining recruit (irrespective of their gender) being heard and valued at the organisation is inclusion. - For a working professional, getting equal rights and fair policy at workplace is inclusion. Now how are we exhibiting these traits and how are we making our workplace, society & above all our country a more inclusive place to be? With female-led companies representing only 20% of all businesses in the UK (2022), as an original 'Girl Power' teen of the 90's, I'm proud to be flying the flag for female-run SME's. In particular, I love being able to support other women in tech, where the goal is to make conversations around digital more accessible and ultimately close the gender gap. The future is equal! Like any business, there can be challenges, but it's true that the culture created within a female-led workplace can have multiple benefits. These might include: 🗝 Unlocking more diverse perspectives ❤️ Demonstrating empathy to colleague and client needs 💪 Creating stronger team dynamics 🤲 Encouraging collaboration over competition 🎁 Appreciating customer loyalty 🎉 Fostering partnerships that celebrate social responsibilities There are so many game-changing organisations we work with at Eggu that I am personally proud to collaborate with. The Institute of Health Visiting (iHV), a predominantly female workforce, are a huge value in supporting new mums, CoppaFeel! are positively driving women's (and men's) health education, and Brook and UK Feminista are actively striving for social change, equality and diversity. Diversity and inclusion in leadership roles most definitely contributes to innovation, creativity, and overall business success. Now a mum to a growing girl with sass, I'm taking the job of 'badass role model' super seriously.
