As I delved into The Education Trust–West Equity in Practice March 2024 newsletter highlighting Womxn’s Herstory Month, Dr. Christopher Nellum's poignant words resonated deeply. He speaks of intentionally encouraging his young daughter to "take up space," emphasizing the significance of empowering young individuals to express themselves fully. This sentiment brought to mind a recent experience at an equity advisory committee meeting that I facilitated. During the meeting, a young student courageously stepped forward, using his voice to and address how our district could combat bullying and racially motivated behaviors in schools. His voice and insight were inspiring. I found myself non-verbally urging him to continue, to "take up space", as did others in the room, creating a supportive environment for him to share his thoughts and strategies. Reflecting on this, I realized how often we inadvertently stifle the voices of young people, either by encouraging them to remain silent or by limiting their expression. This student's initial quiet observation at the meeting underscored the importance of creating spaces where young individuals feel empowered to speak up. Dr. Nellum's message serves as a powerful reminder of the impact we can have by simply holding space for our youth. It is through such actions that we nurture their sense of agency and empower them to make a difference. #equityineducation #studentvoice #studentagency #racialjustice #takeupspace

The application for the next cohort of the Working Towards Racial Equity (WTRE) Series is now open! What is WTRE? 👇 The Lawrence Hall of Science and Justice Outside launched the Working Towards Racial Equity workshop series in 2018 and are officially ready to invite a new cohort of organizations to participate! This series and associated research study supports environmental and outdoor science organizations (including those dedicated to outdoor learning, #environmentaljustice, #environmentalscience, #environmentalliteracy, youth development, and community development) to build capacity to foster equitable, inclusive, and culturally relevant work environments and organizations. It centers #racialequity in its approach because we recognize that racism is at the heart of inequity in the environmental field and in the United States, broadly. We are accepting applications for 5 mid-sized outdoor science organizations (~20-75 staff) to learn with us. The project will kick off with an in-person convening in February of 2025, and activities (in-person and virtual) will continue through to early 2028. What are you waiting for?! Celebrating Diversity and Access in Iowa Head Start Programs Using one of the first systems in the U.S. that includes child-level data from Head Start recipients statewide, our latest research underscores the program's pivotal role in providing access to diverse and underserved communities. Findings reveal that Asian, Black, and Hispanic children are more likely to be enrolled in Head Start compared to their White counterparts. As we continue to explore this data, the importance of programs like Head Start in supporting early childhood education and advancing equity remains clear. "Our names are a huge part of who we are as individuals," says Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Director for the Center for Student Belonging Dioscaris R. Garcia, PhD. "This is why I felt that the My Name Is campaign is so important. It is essentially empowering individuals to say, 'This is who I am.'" Panel Discussion at SXSW: Navigating the Future with Austin Area Urban League Black Future House The discussion centered around the necessity of intergenerational collaboration in advocacy-working collectively across different age groups. We recognize the contributions of older generations in paving the way for the next generation. Now the helm is being taken up by young advocates such as me. However, it's crucial to note that advocacy extends beyond personal aspirations; it involves empowering and learning from younger advocates to shape their visions for the future. The call to action emphasizes collective action in addressing pressing issues such as the assault on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), peaceful protests, and challenges in education. It underscores the need for unified voices in advocating for change, urging active participation in legislative processes, electoral engagement, community dialogues, and other platforms to strengthen our collective impact.
