CO Safe Schools Annual Report Card from Nikki James Zellner, Founder CO Safe Schools: Each year, I put out an annual report card – recapping stakeholders on the incidents, sources, and statistics related to the previous academic year's CO incidents across daycares, K-12, and college campuses in the United States. Our 2023-2024 Campus Report Card is now available. This year's report card is harrowing, as it shows: – an 82% increase in school-based CO incidents over the previous year – a 134% increase in school-based CO injuries over the previous year – a preventable on-campus student fatality https://lnkd.in/eRrEP5Cf

Interesting new report that highlights the importance of creating opportunities for students to take at least one AP class (better yet, two or three) during high school given the positive correlation with college persistence. I saw that effect first hand time and time again as a high school teacher, especially in Title I settings. I’ve long admired the work that Equal Opportunity Schools does to create pipelines to advanced coursework within high schools for students, especially those who may be overlooked for these opportunities. I also think it’s important to acknowledge the limits of AP coursework and encourage students to also pursue classes, extracurricular activities, volunteer opportunities, and part-time jobs that may not have the AP stamp of approval but can do just as much to clarify passions and prepare students for meaningful careers and life pursuits.
The College Board looked into what the number of APs students take, and how well they do, says about their college outcomes.

In 2023–2024, the average costs for one academic year of college tuition and fees, room and board, plus some other expenses such as books, was $28,840 at a four-year public, in-state school, compared to $60,420 at a four-year private institution. For four years of full-time school, that’s $115,360 to $241,680 if annual costs remain the same.

While it is mostly private colleges that are closing, both public and private colleges are cutting programs and majors. Watch this prototype version of an app that compares the program completion numbers of private colleges in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Students and parents, it is the low-enrollment and low graduation programs and majors that are most likely to get cut during these difficult financial times in higher education. Compare the numbers here before committing to a college with lower numbers. https://lnkd.in/ghBWfgZR
