Happy #NationalPrincipalsMonth! EOS understands the impact of a passionate principal. Not only do we work closely with school leaders from around the country, but several of our partnership directors were once principals and assistant principals themselves! Seeing, understanding and unlocking student potential.
About us
At EOS, we work with districts to support their commitment to increasing academic opportunities for all of their students – especially those who are historically underserved and underrepresented. Our model is built on deep partnerships in which we provide data, insights, and year-round support to ensure that all students have equal access to advanced academic programs like AP, IB, and dual enrollment, and thrive once enrolled. Simply put, we want students to have the opportunity to build the life they want. Our data and experience has shown that opening access to rigorous coursework pushes students to success in both school and beyond. Since 2011, EOS has helped districts truly understand the academic interests, aspirations, and barriers to success for each of their students to identify the courses that best align with their unique goals. We work with a diverse range of districts, from rural and suburban to the biggest urban school systems in the country.

“We are concerned about the future of our world and our role in it. We want a future built on peace and prosperity – where our communities can thrive, where our holistic needs are met.” – Carolina Carchi, student at Roberto Clemente Community Academy in Chicago Public Schools. Carolina joined eight high school students from across the country and NBC News’ Chuck Todd for a Town Hall on the upcoming election at the Council of the Great City Schools Fall Conference last week. She discussed ways to engage young voters who feel “disconnected” and “disillusioned” with the political process, from increasing attention on issues like climate change and gun violence, to improving voter access and education. We loved seeing a student from an EOS partner school speaking on the national stage and are excited to see the impact she makes after graduation!

“Indigenous history is American history. It’s woven into the foundations of our nation, and it is essential that students understand the depth and complexity of this history,” writes EOS Partnership Director Anna Leigh Marquez. “Unfortunately, Indigenous perspectives are often sidelined or simplified in traditional curricula, which can leave students with an incomplete understanding of the past,” she adds. She argues that educators have a responsibility to address this, by elevating Indigenous voices in their lesson plans. This improves student learning, and makes it clear to underrepresented students that they belong – and that their stories matter. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gKvTUB9b #IndigenousPeoplesDay

Today is World Mental Health Day. EOS’ work and mission are deeply tied to the mental health of the students we impact. Our research shows that feelings of belonging and psychological safety are key to improved student engagement and academic outcomes. Students from historically underserved backgrounds often tell us they feel unwelcome, unseen and misunderstood in rigorous courses. This can lead to: ▪️ Disengagement at school ▪️ Absenteeism ▪️ Lack of enrollment in the pathways that set students up for college and beyond. Trusted adults in school buildings can help students feel seen, accepted and valued through cultivating cues and conditions of belonging in their classrooms. Hispanic/Latine students are the largest subgroup in Chicago Public Schools, comprising over 47% of the student body. The district has made massive strides in opening access to advanced pathways for these students since partnering with EOS in 2017. Its AP and IB classrooms now reflect its student population more than ever before. Over the past 7 years, enrollment of 11th and 12th grade Hispanic/Latine students in AP and IB courses increased from 36% to 55%. Meanwhile, AP and IB enrollment for all juniors and seniors shot from 39% to 59% as the EOS partnership expanded from 6 schools to 49. This school year, 51.7% of CPS’ IB students are Hispanic/Latine. During #HispanicHeritageMonth, we want to celebrate CPS for its achievements in bridging opportunity gaps for its Hispanic and Latine students, and for paving pathways to postsecondary success for all its students. Join our webinar tomorrow at 12pm CST to hear from CPS' Keanon Thompson, M. Ed. and others on how the district bridged these gaps: https://lnkd.in/dcUiVwWP

Hispanic and Latine students graduate college at a lower rate than their peers, a trend that corresponds to enrollment gaps in rigorous high school courses. They are 1.6 less likely to take AP courses, and 2.9 times less likely to take dual enrollment courses than white students. Click the link below to hear from Erika Cabrera on the barriers of access to rigorous courses facing Hispanic/Latine students, and how EOS addresses these challenges through supporting and resourcing students, families and educators. https://lnkd.in/exFMFcWn #HispanicHeritageMonth #LHHM #StudentSuccess

Chicago Public Schools has transformed its advanced pathways over the last seven years, and Keanon Thompson, M. Ed., CPS’ AP Program Support Specialist, has played a key role. This is why he was named one of EOS’ 2024-25 Opportunity Champions. Our data shows that bridging gaps in access to rigorous courses starts with breaking down biases among school staff. But how can this be done? Join us on October 10 at 12 PM CST for our first ever "EOS In Conversation,” to learn about how Chicago Public Schools has increased enrollment in rigorous courses through transforming educator mindsets. After 40 years in public education, Chris Belcher has gained a clear idea of which students can handle academic rigor. The answer? All students. “My belief as an instructional leader is every kid is capable,” he said. What blocks students from success is subpar curriculum and instruction, a lack of opportunities, and limited adult mindsets about which students are “ready” for the challenge. Click the link below to learn about the insights he has uncovered over decades of changing adult mindsets on rigor.

Last school year, Guilford County Schools enrolled 1,677 historically underrepresented students in AP and IB classes with the help of EOS’ outreach list. This year, they expect a 6% participation increase in advanced courses – that's over 360 new students from underrepresented backgrounds! This progress reflects the district’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to their advanced pathways, and the power of partnership in doing this work.
