Today we are celebrating one of our projects at Research Park Plaza winning a Silver Award from the National Association of Landscape Professionals! This Northwest Austin office campus provides workers an outdoor escape, complete with multi-use spaces under large existing trees, lush native planting and pathways to connect users from building to building. Congratulations to Principal Ashley Scroggs and our team for designing this award-winning project, and to our friends at Clean Scapes for implementing this beautifully and bringing our vision to life.

McGregor Coxall is very proud to share the work of Jeremy Chivas, Landscape Architect in our Sydney Studio, who recently co-authored a chapter published within the Springer Nature book ‘The Empathic City’. The chapter titled ‘Technology and Ecology in a Green Mesh: A Healthy Alliance for the Smart City’, expands upon Chivas's Masters research; the concept for a community-implemented, data-driven metropolitan green network, coined ‘The Green Mesh’. The book itself has a focus on urban health equity, where our urban environments have a profound capacity to either support or hinder human health and wellbeing. It advocates for sustainable, inclusive modes of shaping our built environment, advocating for contextually responsive, equitable, empathic cities to benefit residents around the world, featuring further contributions from 'The International Society for Urban Health', New York, and the 'Faculty of Health, Queensland University of Technology', Brisbane. As we commemorate Earth Day, we highlight our involvement in the South Buffalo Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) Implementation Strategy, another noteworthy project in our 40-year history of shaping communities and enhancing quality of life that also aligns with the Earth Day ethos of environmental stewardship. A Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) is a designation assigned to areas with abandoned or underutilized properties, typically due to real or perceived environmental contamination resulting in economic disinvestment. The New York State Department of State BOA Program provides funding to eligible entities (i.e., municipalities, community-based organizations, and community boards) to develop plans for areas characterized by multiple vacant properties and/or brownfields. While this project focused on South Buffalo, this concept resonates globally as communities worldwide strive for environmental renewal and economic revitalization. The South Buffalo BOA spans 2,000 acres along the Buffalo River, adjacent to Lake Erie, and once hosted heavy industries like Republic Steel. Over the years, our team, in collaboration with the City of Buffalo Office of Strategic Planning and Buffalo Urban Development Corporation (BUDC), has worked diligently to chart a course for revitalization, guided by the BOA Plan. This plan has already catalyzed over $1 billion in new investment, including notable projects like the Tesla Plant at Riverbend and the Buffalo Lakeside Commerce Park. This study received the 2014 Outstanding NY BOA Award by the New Partners for Community Revitalization. As a member of a multi-disciplined team, our responsibilities included a comprehensive range of tasks, from analyzing existing conditions to master planning and identifying strategic redevelopment sites. This project is not only a testament to our expertise in urban planning and redevelopment but also an affirmation of our commitment to sustainability. Moreover, the South Buffalo BOA stands as one of the pioneering implementation strategies under the BOA program, setting a precedent for future revitalization efforts. We celebrate the progress made in the South Buffalo BOA, symbolizing our dedication to creating resilient, environmentally conscious communities. We extend our gratitude to the City of Buffalo and our clients for their collaboration in this transformative endeavor. Urban and regional planning is so rich in potential museum content (not to mention, just plain important for people to know) that it is worth pursuing even if your local planning agency can’t partner with you at the moment. Here are some other ways to proceed - starting with finding different partners.

The FinEst Centre for Smart Cities #GreenTwins project developed new digital tools for the participatory planning of urban green spaces. This fantastic video showing the final results of the project brought a smile to my face. Thanks to the colleagues featured in the video! We really achieved a lot! My contribution to GreenTwins was related to user research. During the project, we conducted several interactive workshops, interviews with different user groups and tested the tools with users. This all taught us a lot how to integrate user research into an innovation project, and what the end users need from the planning tools for urban green. #urbangreen #ePlanning #eParticipation #urbanplanning
I feel really proud to have been leading a great team in the FinEst Centre for Smart Cities project #GreenTwins for the past years! We were able to conclude it with great success at the end of August. If you want to learn more about the results, which focus on the digitisation of urban green, biodiversity, integration of data into the Digital Twin of the City of Tallinn and at the same time on inclusion, participation and more democratic processes, watch our video. There, you can also have a look at the open city hub of Tallinn "Avalinn", which we created within the project. Some members of our great team present the results: Project manager and researcher Viktorija Prilenska, researcher Laugren Ilves (both TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology Academy of Architecture and Urban Studies), Abdelrahman Elkhatib, Andres Maremäe, Kaidi Põldoja (all City of Tallinn). We received great support from our collaboration partner HLRS - High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart. https://lnkd.in/en_c-khR

It's finally here.... I'm pleased to announce a new and exciting chapter for Built Environments - North Carolina! Many already know that I have joined forces with Jarrett Davis to offer a new and even bolder brand of building science. Our new Carolina testing facility is bigger, better, and full of ideas! Expect many new announcements in the coming months! Though I'll still have a major presence in Minnesota, my immediate focus now involves enclosure performance in hot, humid coastal environments. These initiatives will only grow in the coming years. Along the way, we'll tackle (and develop) new products, new approaches, and new ways of thinking about the built environment. #buildingscience #northcarolina #buildingenvelope #buildingenclosure #buildingproducts #materialsscience #materialscience #researchanddevelopment #research #letsdothis

Cities are designed in a way that accommodates sidewalks, safer bike lanes, physical activities, and recreation areas that inspire people to make healthier choices and live good lives. Our built environment gives us chances to improve public health and grow active living. Thus, creating many open spaces in cities not only adds natural beauty to urban areas but can also increase the health and well-being of their citizens. Early city planners knew that open spaces are good and give benefits for large interactions and for social cooperation while supporting community health and well-being. Explore in detail about Utilization of Open Space for Beauty and Healthier Cities in Third World Countries in my next Research Article available now at Universal Wiser Publisher [Green Building and Construction Economics] Recognized Journal Globally.
