Today we’re proud to share our refreshed human rights strategy which is a recommitment to respect and support the human rights of our team members, customers, the communities we serve and workers throughout our supply chain. Our refreshed strategy provides a framework to prevent harm and foster a culture that embraces diversity, inclusion and equality. This includes fair and safe working conditions, responsible purchasing practices and protecting the rights of people across our operations and value chain, especially the most vulnerable. This strategy has evolved from an extensive period of research, learning, consultation and design, in partnership with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including NGOs, suppliers, academics, team members, survivors of modern slavery and workers in our supply chain. Prompted by a combination of global crises, high profile worker rights violations, and law changes, companies are in the spotlight to ensure workers are protected throughout the supply chain. What are the issues for investors? Key takeaways: - Worker rights crises in sectors ranging from mining to fashion have highlighted the financial risks of poor human rights practices. - Such controversies, combined with new regulations, are driving greater transparency around human rights throughout supply chains. - Protecting these rights can mitigate financial, legal and reputational risks while also ensuring companies contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). - As an investor, we identify worker rights issues and encourage companies to align with important benchmarks such as the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Today we launch a Collective Impact Coalition (CIC) to address violence and harassment in global supply chains. This year marks the 5th anniversary of ILO Convention 190 (#C190), that established the first international labour standard to provide a common framework to prevent, remedy and eliminate violence and harassment in the world of work. However, there is still much progress to be made when it comes to implementation and the transformation of workplace policies, practices and culture – and businesses have a key role to play. In this context, this coalition – convened by WBA, and joined by a diverse group of organisations, including amfori - Trade with Purpose, Boston Common AM, BFBHR - БФБПЧ, BRAC, Ethos Foundation (Switzerland), Good Business Lab, Jamaa Resource Initiatives, Impax Asset Management, Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR), Oxfam, Solidaridad Network and WageIndicator Foundation – is coming together with the goal of driving company change to accelerate the recognition, prevention and redress of violence and harassment in global apparel and agricultural supply chains. As businesses, it's essential to reflect on our role in upholding human rights standards throughout our supply chains. Yet, many still face significant gaps and challenges in meeting societal expectations. "New research from the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) has revealed 90 percent of the world’s 2000 most influential organisations are failing to meet fundamental societal expectations in respecting human rights, providing decent work and acting ethically." - PASA, https://hubs.la/Q02Hndpy0 #supplychain #ESG #humanrights

Highlights from this week's human rights roundtable: We hosted a formidable group of experts for a discussion on what we know from an evidence-perspective about how to change behaviours that impact human rights and - critically – where we need more research to understand what works. Key areas for future research include: - Is storytelling effective at engaging training recipients and changing their behaviour? Which stories resonate best? - What types of grievance mechanisms lead to greatest worker trust and usage (e.g. internal, independent, worker voice app) when cascaded through operations and supply chains? - Does increasing psychological safety between buyer and supplier lead to more human rights impacts being flagged and addressed collaboratively? Huge thanks to our thought partners and thought leaders to date in this work, including attendees Peter Nestor, Chris Rider, Tess van den Oever, Francis West, Rachel Cowburn-Walden, Priya Gill, Guusje Lindemann, James Elfer, MoreThanNow If you are interested in collaborating on cutting-edge research around what changes behaviour in this space get in touch using the Typeform in the comments.

Last week I delivered an in person talk to the The Institute of Quarrying Scotland Branch on women’s safety. It’s 2024 and we’re ready to talk about this - so we did, all 144 of us, in graphic, uncomfortable, squirmy detail, thanks to Mark Friel. Too many of our workplaces are still designed for men to work, be safe, and generally survive in all day as male humans, leaving us female humans struggling in way too many aspects. Our safety is a biggie. ❓Is this because industry leaders expect women to just slot into the environment? ❓Is this because industry leaders don’t recognise our biological differences? ❓Or is this because industry leaders refuse to deal with the sexual violence pyramid we women have to deal with alone on the daily? Ignoring it doesn’t make it not exist you know, it makes women collateral damage - and don’t you just make us feel it too. I’m not that person who shouts and does nothing, I have answers. It took a lot of courage to stand in front of so many disgusted faces, but I have the knowledge and experience to make a big difference for women’s safety, their health, and their wellbeing. When the few women in the room came up afterwards and said “about bloody time”, and the IOQ president tell’s the room it’s the defining safety presentation of his career, the fear is worth it.
