There is a sign in a hard-to-reach area of the Rocky Mountain National Forest. The sign reads: “The Mountain Doesn’t Care”. There are stories about talented and experienced climbers who did not survive their mountain adventures. The mountain did what mountains always do. It provided challenges that these climbers could not meet – and some number of them perished in their mountain journeys. We will take a small amount of poetic license and suggest “The Market Doesn’t Care”. The market for higher education does not care what college leaders and board members are trying to do. These leaders do not shape the market – the market shapes them.
