Late summer and the start of school always make me reflect on my many years of teaching and this year is no different. I've been thinking a lot about what I've learned from all the classes, students, lessons, PDs, and the mindless minutia of education in America. I've had this list for about 3 years, it's changed and grown. Here's the latest iteration of "What I've Learned from Teaching Teens."

Recently, one of my students wrote an essay on the topic 'If I were a school Principal' . In the essay he proposed the idea of homeschooling for all students. While I appreciate the simplicity of homeschooling, it made me ponder its implications. The friendships formed in school contribute to the richness of the educational experience. As someone who cherishes the memories of school friendships, I understand the importance of social interactions in learning. I believe education isn't just about what's taught in textbooks but also about the relationships and experiences that shape us. When you tell God you want to reshape mindsets and empower His children with wholesome education, so they can live intentional, creative, productive and wholesome lives according to God’s design and blueprint for their lives, He responds. First, God uses your educational experience as a pathway to draw your attention to how unwholesome our educational curriculum is presently. Secondly, you strongly desire a change in education and in people’s ability to produce and create valuable solutions, so you pray for wisdom and grace to be a useful, relevant and significant person in being the change I desire and also in birthing an innovative solution as the life-giving Spirit that I am. Thirdly, He gives you an idea that will position you strategically in the educational sector. Fourthly, you blend education with technology and The Stillwaters Spring Academy a school for soft skills and intrapersonal development is born.

The quote expresses the idea that different methods of learning have different effects on memory and understanding. Simply telling someone something is the least effective way, as they will easily forget it. Teaching someone something is better, as they will remember it for a while. But involving someone in something is the best way, as they will learn it by doing it and understand it deeply. #teachthechildren #parenting

Do we really believe all children can learn? I do. I believe that every student can learn and has the ability inside of them to grow and progress. Some may learn more than others and in different ways, but all #students can learn and should be treated with respect. 𝟵 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱'𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 : Every parent wants to ensure that their children are getting the best education possible. To understand this better, they need to have a conversation with their children's teachers and support their learning at home. Here are 9 important questions every parent asks their child's teacher. 1️⃣. How do you deal with students who struggle in the class? 2️⃣. What do you do to add creativity and innovative thinking in the classroom? 3️⃣. How does my child handle challenges and setbacks? 4️⃣. What are the common barriers to learning in class? 5️⃣. How do you balance focusing on students' strength and weakness? 6️⃣. What strategies do you use to build a positive class room environment? 7️⃣. How can I support my child's learning at home? 8️⃣. How are you helping in developing my child's social skills? 9️⃣. What should I know about your teaching philosophy?

I saw this reel and it got me thinking about future educational practices. I don't know that I agree with everything she says, but she's right about one thing: Teaching Gen Alpha - a generation that "does not care" about authority as much as previous generations, requires the adults (educators and teachers) to adapt their approach. What she doesn't say is this: 1) Every older generation thinks the next generation cares less about authority than they did. Socrates wrote about this in the 4th century when describing how frustrating adolescent children were because they didn't care about authority and made impulsive decisions. Pushing back against authority (within reason) is a necessary part of growing up and establishing one's independent identity. 2) Education goes through cycles with old approaches coming back again under new names. Curious to see which old approach will be used as the "new" adaptation. 3) Great instructors approach classroom management in a way that works with how their students understand teacher-student power of authority dynamics. This means, great teachers don't just create engaging content. They pay attention to the concerns of students while maintaining clear and consistent expectations that leave room for student voice and autonomy within reason. Adapting and flexible thinking within clear boundaries are part of what makes great teachers great. 4) #teachers #educators and #administrators should be paying attention to parenting trends about ten years ahead of when the children of those parents arrive in their schools and classrooms. Doing so will provide insight into what teachers can expect from and of their students as well as how they can navigate and foster a supportive and positive parent/guardian-teacher-student relationship. https://lnkd.in/eTfvwAnH
