If you've listened to myself or any of my colleagues at American Student Assistance in the last few years, you've heard us talk at length about #middleschool as the prime time to engage kids in #careerreadiness learning. This is often met with questions. And rightly so. Why middle school? Isn't that too young? How can middle school #careerexploration even work? A couple of months ago, I shared a resource we published that focused on learnings we obtained from providing grants to middle schools around Massachusetts for career exploration—the challenges, the triumphs, and the opportunities. Our piece in Medium (linked below) highlights these key findings and best practices, including first-hand testimonials from educators, administrators, and students who participated in these programs. ➡ https://bit.ly/47aG4kw If you've worked with middle school-aged kids to help them explore careers, what are some of the things you noticed? What were the most difficult and rewarding parts of the experience? As we continue to navigate this space, input from the community is critical.

As a former Career Services professional having served more than a decade at various institutional types, I applaud the intentional infusion of career planning throughout the college experience! #highereducation #careerservices #careerplanning
I appreciate this article by President Adam Weinberg from Denison University. Career Services has been an afterthought for way too long. It needs to be foundational to the #highereducation experience. Students are preparing for the future through college.

The latest reauthorization of the Perkins Career and Technical Education Act (Perkins V) allows middle school programs, as early as fifth grade, to receive federal funding. Many states have responded by passing laws and updating policy to encourage the expansion of middle school career exploration; however, the depth and scale of implementation varies widely from state to state. ESG’s Kathleen (Boyle) Mathers and Julie Lammers, from American Student Assistance, identify four key priorities states can consider to expand and enhance career exploration to prepare youth for postsecondary education and career success for Education Commission of the States: https://lnkd.in/gPSCqYjA

This student's story explains why it's time to rethink "credentials." "...While societal stigmas may plague the reputation of community college, my experience has allowed me to understand its quintessential role in education. For me and millions of others, our dual enrollment in a community college is more than just another class: "It’s a chance to do what we believed was impossible."
