That's more land than our national parks! These private initiatives are playing a crucial role in wildlife conservation. 🇿🇦🌿 This area is considerably larger than formally protected conservation areas, which account for 9.2% of the land (11.28 million hectares). Interestingly, the combined land area covered by game ranches and conservation areas is over 15 times larger than the landmass of Wales, England, and Scotland combined. On a recent visit to South Africa, I witnessed over 100 elephants interacting in their natural habitat. Observing the social dynamics of such a massive group of elephants offered a rare glimpse into the complexity of these majestic animals. But the scene also brought to light a critical challenge in modern conservation. While globally endangered, elephant populations in many parks and reserves are growing rapidly, often outgrowing their protected areas. We witnessed groups of bachelor elephants returning from their nightly forays across the borders into Zimbabwe and Mozambique. These movements lead to friction with local communities as elephants often raid crops. An overabundance of elephants in a closed ecosystem can also be detrimental, altering the landscape and diminishing biodiversity (they eat a lot). Despite these challenges, seeing a large herd of elephants play and interact was a magical experience. It underscores the importance of innovating sustainable solutions for wildlife conservation that benefit both nature and people, in the 21st century, and beyond.

WILDLIFE CONSERVATION IN SEPIK WETLANDS Sepik Wetlands, a haven for biodiversity in Papua New Guinea, confronts imminent threats like deforestation and habitat degradation. Sepik Wetlands and Peatland Limited spearheads conservation efforts to safeguard this ecological treasure. Our initiatives encompass habitat restoration, anti-poaching measures, and community education to foster environmental stewardship. By partnering with local communities and indigenous groups, we ensure sustainable resource management while preserving traditional livelihoods. Furthermore, our monitoring programs track species populations and ecosystem health, guiding conservation strategies. Through these integrated approaches, we not only protects endangered species such as the New Guinea crocodile and numerous bird species but also maintains the ecological balance of this vital wetland ecosystem. #BiodiversityConservation #CommunityEngagement #EcosystemProtection
