My posts are not as frequent now I am retired. Retirement has brought its own set of challenges, but finding a purpose post-retirement is one that many of us face. One of the positive aspects is doing things you enjoy and ignoring the boring things in life.
In that regard I was delighted to be asked to lead the course development programme for County Armagh Golf Club. Our latest project was the much-anticipated redesign of our 18th hole, which opened last weekend.
Stretching an impressive 201 yards from the back tee, this par 3 hole is not for the faint-hearted, especially with the often-challenging wind conditions we face. Renowned Irish Golf Architect, Ken Kearney, designed the new hole, which was constructed to the highest standards by DAR Golf and providing a true test of golf.
But what sets this hole apart is its unrivalled setting. As you step on to the tee, you'll be greeted by a panoramic view of the historic city of Armagh. Ken’s design maximises the dramatic backdrop of the city’s two cathedrals, creating a memorable and challenging finishing hole. One that will undoubtedly become the signature hole of our club.
Having spent a significant portion of my working life confined behind a desk, I relished the opportunity for the frequent walks of the course alongside our architect. Days in Stormont Castle were a distant memory, as I listened to Ken’s thoughts on what makes a good golf course.
And here’s the sales pitch. If you are up for the challenge, why not book a round through www.armaghgolf.co.uk or the pro shop on 028 3752 5861. We are available for corporate days when you can also enjoy the food in our award-winning Parkland Restaurant.
Life is too short to sit behind that desk!
