⭐ Amazing research from The Institute of Cancer Research who have developed an 'ultra sensitive' blood test which can predict the return of breast cancer years before being detected by scans. The test detects traces of a tumour's DNA before a complete relapse and has been proven to be 100% accurate in predicting which patients will experience a recurrence of their cancer. The trial is still in its only stages, having only tested 78 patients, however it provides great hope that the early identification of recurrent breast cancer lies in a not too distant future. #diagnostics #breastcancer #bloodtests #earlydiagnosis https://lnkd.in/dsrzrZxm

In honor of #NationalCancerResearchMonth, BCRF investigator Dr. Sherene Loi spoke with BCRF's Sadia Zapp about global collaboration, recurrence risk reduction, strategies to better treat younger patients, and what she envisions for the future of breast cancer research. Through the landmark BCRF-supported SOFT trial, Dr. Loi and her colleagues have already developed treatment strategies that have improved outcomes for women under 40, and she recently published notable research on TILs in triple-negative breast cancer. Did you know breast cancer is the most common form of disease worldwide? While there are preventative tests for women and men to capture signs of breast cancer early, for some, it still can be too late. This new "ultra-sensitive" blood test is truly groundbreaking in that regard - helping to predict if breast cancer will return years before the disease shows up on scans, allowing treatment to start earlier and improve survival rates. While the journey to widespread availability may be complex, the implications of this advancement are profound. I eagerly anticipate the day when this test becomes a standard tool in the fight against breast cancer, offering hope and improved outcomes globally. #BreastCancer #BloodTest #ResearchBreakthrough

Researchers like BCRF investigator Dr. Shelley Hwang are hoping to identify less invasive, more customized approaches to care for patients diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). DCIS is the earliest, non-invasive form of breast cancer, which why it’s sometimes called stage 0 breast cancer. And right now, DCIS is typically treated like invasive, early-stage breast cancer because there isn’t a way to predict which cases of DCIS will progress to full-blown invasive breast cancer. The ambiguity can be particularly challenging for patients who are unsure of the best course of action. Tune into BCRF’s official podcast, Investigating Breast Cancer, to hear Dr. Hwang on why we need to better understand the biology of stage 0 breast cancer and how her research is moving this forward. https://bit.ly/3QWPeuL

Another one of our BRC's themes is Precision Diagnostics and Cancer Evolution. Our theme lead is Professor Nicholas Turner, and we aim to deliver on 4 key aims which you can read more about here: https://lnkd.in/e7Dt9wps Within the last year, a study in this theme has improved our understanding of an increasingly common complication of advanced breast cancer: https://lnkd.in/eJ3YPsi7 Additionally, scientists have developed a new way of using cancers' DNA to spot cancer patients who may benefit from immunotherapy: https://lnkd.in/e2gjr_wE #FutureofCancer

I came across this article in The Times over the weekend and found it very interesting. The mentioned test has the potential to predict the return of breast cancer years before it would typically show up on a scan. As a breast cancer survivor, this is especially significant to me, considering one of the greatest fears post-treatment is the possibility of a recurrence. To learn more about this ground breaking development, check out the article here: https://lnkd.in/ejw9DpVb

Today is #WorldCancerDay and we’re joining the call to #ClosetheCareGap by looking at how existing UK strategies for tackling cancer can inadvertently exclude the brain tumour community. With overall cancer survival in the UK higher than it’s ever been, it’s clear that NHS Cancer Programmes are making incredible progress. But they aren’t having the same effect on people diagnosed with a brain tumour. In this blog post, we explore exactly why that is and what changes are needed. https://bit.ly/3vXncaR
What would it take to close the care gap for brain tumours?
