We’re excited to announce David Garcia Jurado as the new Chair of the Scottish Steering Committee (SSC)! 🎉 The SSC plays a vital role in driving policy, campaigning, and influencing work in Scotland, currently focusing on faster and better diagnoses for those affected by brain tumours. David’s connection to The Charity is deeply personal, as his son Lucas was diagnosed with a brain tumour shortly after his first birthday. As well as working as part with our policy team, David is also fundraising for The Charity. Tomorrow, he will take on the Loch Ness Challenge. Best of Luck, David! We’re giving a massive shout-out to neuro nurse Emma and her colleagues who tackled a 10km walk in Glasgow in aid of The Charity. Clinical Nurse Specialists like Emma are vital in treating and caring for those affected by a brain tumour. We're in awe of their efforts to raise awareness and funds outside their role. Having raised an incredible £1.7k for The Charity, thank you for your determination and commitment to improving the lives of those affected by a brain tumour diagnosis - you guys rock!

Earlier this month, Young Ambassador Emma Hall attended a paediatric brain cancer conference held at  CRUK Cambridge Institute to share her experience of living with a low-grade brain tumour. The event was for PhD students, post-docs and researchers working on paediatric brain cancer. Emma sparked many more conversations, and we are so grateful for her boldness and bravery in using her lived experience to help shape future research into brain tumours.  Thank you, Emma!

In 2022, Jamie was diagnosed with a low-grade meningioma after experiencing headaches and issues with his balance. Despite physiotherapy, things didn’t improve. Then, an MRI scan revealed a 6cm brain tumour. In preparation for surgery, Jamie turned to The Charity’s support services, receiving weekly counselling both before and after the operation. Now, as Deputy Sales Director at Pearl & Dean, Jamie is paying it forward by arranging for our ‘Better Safe Than Tumour’ advert to be screened at cinemas across the country this month. Gavin was diagnosed with a pilocytic astrocytoma after experiencing headaches and vision problems at just 21. Surgeons couldn’t fully remove the tumour due to its position, and despite the efforts made in surgery to avoid this, Gavin lost 75% of his sight as a result of the condition. To mark his 50th birthday, Gavin is leading a team of 50, including his friend Louise, to take on the Thames Bridges Trek in aid of The Charity. So far, the team have raised an incredible £32K through hosting community events, including charity days in Tesco, bingo evening, raffles, tombola, and bake sales, just to name a few!
