When it comes to leading a team on a construction site technical knowledge is important , but there’s another trait that’s just as critical: Confidence. I’ve worked with countless supervisors, and there’s one thing that sets the most effective ones apart—they own their role. Supervisors who lead with confidence aren’t just managing a project; they’re inspiring their team, making tough decisions, and maintaining control when things get hectic. Here’s why confidence is so important in this role: Decision-Making -- Construction moves fast, and there’s no time for second-guessing. Confident supervisors make decisive choices that keep the project moving forward, even under pressure. Team Morale –- A team takes cues from its leader. When a supervisor is confident, it creates a sense of security for the crew, leading to better performance and higher morale on site. Problem-Solving –- Unexpected challenges are inevitable in construction. Supervisors who trust their own abilities are better equipped to handle issues swiftly and effectively, minimising downtime. But here’s the thing—confidence isn’t something you’re born with. It’s built through experience, mentoring, and preparation. 💪 Empowering Safety Leadership in Residential Construction: CPWR's Free Training Initiativ 🙌 A new initiative from CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training is revolutionizing safety leadership in residential construction. The Foundations for Safety Leadership for Residential Construction, a free training program, is designed to enhance communication and leadership skills among residential construction supervisors. Developed in collaboration with the Healthy Work Center at Washington University in St. Louis, this training divides the 2.5-hour Foundations for Safety Leadership course into five 30-minute sessions, providing flexibility for tailored presentations to diverse audiences and locations. The interactive format of the training engages learners in safety scenarios, prompting them to apply leadership skills to mitigate falls and other workplace hazards. CPWR emphasizes that honing effective leadership skills can lead to improved worker safety practices, reduced jobsite hazards and injuries, heightened morale and teamwork, and enhanced jobsite communication. Furthermore, CPWR offers a range of downloadable resources on its website, including a leadership skills poster, skill sheets with a refresher video, an FAQ page, and a hands-on paper airplane activity demonstrating the significance of three-way communication.
