Last month, the Izaak Walton League released a set of fact sheets detailing the impacts of the Farm Bill. Using the most recent data available, these resources describe conservation investments made in different states and emphasize the importance of keeping key programs strong. The fact sheets include details on the Environmental Quality Incentives Program, Conservation Stewardship Program, Conservation Reserve Program and conservation easements. Metrics include the number of dollars invested, the number of acres protected or enhanced, popular conservation practices, and the League’s chapters and members in each state. Versions are available for select states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Six conservation groups filed a petition with the California Fish and Game Commission (Commission) on March 5, 2024 to request the implementation of legal protections for five populations of the western burrowing owl as a threatened or endangered species under the California Endangered Species Act. Therefore, understanding the stressors and threats faced by #red_knots (Calidris canutus rufa) and other shorebirds at stopover sites is important to protect existing populations, but it is equally important to document the extent and efficacy of different protection efforts employed at stopover sites. This paper documents changes in the number and distribution of red knots using Delaware Bay, New Jersey from 1986 to 2018, briefly describes studies on effects of #human_disturbance on shorebirds, and examines the effect of #conservation (protection) efforts of the NJ Department of Environmental Protection and others to reduce the impact of disturbance resulting from human activities, including their efficacy. #Beach_Monitors #Habitat_Restoration #Management #Education
