On this Juneteenth, the need to develop a safer, non-carceral response to mental health emergencies, other than calling 911, rings loud and clear. As the recent deaths of Wiz Rosario and Ryan Gainer demonstrate, calling 911 during a mental health crisis can cause irreversible harm. Therefore, the standard recommendation of calling 911 during a mental health emergency is not the safest option. Furthermore, there is little recognition of how carceral practices persist in emergency room and inpatient settings. What would it look like to set a new standard of care whereby we account for this risk, instead of ignoring it altogether? This effort is already underway through the Antiracism in Mental Health Fellowship, where healthcare providers worldwide are coming together to bridge the gap between clinical care and sociopolitical reality. As healthcare providers, we can no longer stand by with our hands in the air while another death moves in and out of the news cycle. We owe the people more than this. 👮♂️ Mental healthcare is deeply intertwined with the carceral state, and this is why I have a psychiatric bill of rights that protects people against this harm. 💓 Contacting police during psychiatric emergencies and mandated reporting to child welfare are some of the most obvious examples. But the carceral state also shapes our mental health standards and practices related to physical coercion and containment, diagnostic imposition and indictment, punishment and surveilance, and involuntary interventions--all in the name of "care" that is not so caring. My psychiatric bill of rights ensures that the people I work with never have diagnoses, medications, or interventions forced upon them. Rather, you are the expert of your own life, I strive to be your fiercest advocate, and we avoid further traumatizing you by forcing interventions upon you at all costs. During Mental Health Week, we’d be remiss if we didn’t talk about the supports in place to care for our care teams in body, mind, and spirit.  BODY 🧘♂️ Physical activity has been shown to activate mood-boosting endorphins supporting good mental health. That’s why, St. Joe’s offers fitness and recreation programming (from spin classes to pick up pickleball) at all three campuses so care providers can more easily incorporate movement into their days. MIND 🧠 Caring for our community can be very rewarding, but healthcare workers also face anxiety, cope with grief, experience compassion fatigue, and sometimes live with post-traumatic stress or a multitude of other symptoms, too. To help care for care providers, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is pleased to provide mental health services specifically for healthcare workers and first responders. SPIRIT 🌟 As a part of St. Joe's continuing journey towards greater Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), two Affinity Groups were established to create an opportunity to meet with peers who identify as 2SLGBTQAI+ and/or Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC).   Through the Schwartz Centre for Compassionate Healthcare, rounds, talks, and webinars are offered both in person and virtually to support our healthcare workers through shared experiences, learning, and emotional connections. In the often challenging world of healthcare, particularly in the domain of mental health and elder care, the role of advocacy is pivotal. Care Campaign for the Vulnerable plays an essential role in meetings that involve care decisions for vulnerable individuals. These meetings, typically involving family members, care home managers, mental health assessors, and nurses, are crucial in shaping the care that people receive. A common scenario discussed involves individuals with complex mental health needs where residential care may be proposed. For instance, a recent case CCFTV supported, a potential suicide risk and other distressing incidents were raised during the meeting. Such discussions underscore the necessity of integrating comprehensive psychological and emotional support into the care plan. It's not just about providing a safe environment but also about understanding and addressing the underlying issues that affect the person's mental health.
