You may have seen my post asking people to share what generation they are and what their very first job was. It was mostly GenXers who responded with a few Millennials and it was clear that most of us had very hands-on/practical jobs, often requiring customer skills. I would love to hear from GenZers or those of you who work with/parent this generation to see if their typical first jobs differ. From the GenXers and Millennials, we had lots of things like: - Shop worker - Waiting tables - Fish & chip shop - Amusements - Cleaning - Babysitting - Fast food These are all things that still exist so who's doing these jobs in the evenings, weekends, over the holidays etc?? Is it young people still? Also, what other/common casual jobs are your seeing your GenZers doing to support their education, save up for holidays, devices etc etc? #GenZ #multigenerational

Is it Age Discrimination? YES! It’s clear that customer service has taken a nosedive with these “NEW” hiring apps! Seriously, what more do I need to do? Should I perform splits or backflips? I can do those by the way. Just don’t ask me to juggle. Sports? Count me in; I’ll tackle anything! I make it a point to learn something new every day of my life. The real issue lies within the systems employers use. Some employers take the easy route, already having a candidate in mind, while I’m over here trying to qualify for the Olympics of job applications! Yes, I'm over 50? And that is an issue why? I’m determined to prove that AGE IS JUST A NUMBER, and I will never retire. It is not in my DNA folks!! Age discrimination? Not on my watch! I refuse to let it dictate my abilities. I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but it’s ridiculous to judge someone based on their age. I’ll soon become your competition, if I have to! I’m up to speed on all the latest technology. Why? Have you got a team of employees who appear to be disengaged and lacklustre❓ Are you #recruiting the right people❓ Are you asking the right questions at interview❓ Are you always making #hiring decisions based on experience and qualifications❓ What's stopping you from giving people an opportunity to join your team from another sector❓ Have you ever wondered what is contributing to the shortage of experienced and qualified staff❓ I'm talking at support worker level rather than management level I understand that there is guidance that needs to be adhered to. However, the staffing crisis doesn't really need to be as difficult as it is. Think about where you started from. Who gave you, your first opportunity❓ What an amazing place to be in when you can now give other's an opportunity when you spot potential and valuable skills. New recruits should show-up with energy, passion, motivation, a keen appetite to learn and to get stuck in. They should have a natural ability to connect with young people. They should want to get the best outcomes for them. This job role isn't for everyone. it takes special people with special abilities to make a difference and transform lives. Just because a candidate has experience or the qualification doesn't make them automatically right for the role or for the young people who are in your care.
