Are service and repair manuals essential when repairing complex facilities equipment? Absolutely! years ago I met an engineer from Vietnam. He instilled in me importance of installation, repair and service manuals. It may amaze you to know the majority of multimillion facilities do not have an equipment manual library. knowledge of manual use, is not part of interviews. Facilities Managers and directors have no knowledge relating to the complexities of services at their facilities. Another area of employment used by many companies is Talent acquisition, these employment specialists are not responsible for or have knowledge regarding intricate operations that are necessary for the function and operation of a building. Ability to read and Understand manuals and schematics are essential inquires to be made at interviews and pre employment.

When I received my first salary as Junior Field Service Engineer (see previous post for details), I decided to upgrade my PC. Office laptop I had from the beginning of student life was already too old and too weak for calculations and math models of my diploma. But the main reason I wanted this upgrade was that laptop was too weak for the games 😂 So I found used PC with 95-watt quad-core Intel and discrete video card. It was real monster for that time, and also had significant heating bonus. Luckily, owner of this PC lived not far from the campus, so we agreed to meet on weekend and I didn't need to get any transport. I bought the PC on sunny Saturday and carried it to the campus, enjoying the deal and the walk itself. But when I came to my room and plugged everything, I realised that I have several missed calls from my boss. "Why we were not able to reach you?" - boss asked after I called back. "I was busy bying new PC, and it's weekend" - I replied. I didn't expect any work this day. "You know, we are providing service to very demanding clients. You should be available even on weekends, because we might want to take you on urgent calls" - boss said. At that moment I understood that I will not work on such a job for a long, but I agreed to inform the boss about "busy weekends" when I'll be 100% unavailable. So, the second important lesson I took on this job: keeping work-life balance is your own responsibility. We are not obliged to fulfill all demands of our employer, but we need to protect our position. Moreover, we have to report to the boss only things mentioned in the contract, and in the rest we are free. For sure, for almost 1 year in field service I also enhanced some of my hard skills: work with electrical equipment, soldering, troubleshooting, installation, wiring and so on. It also helped me in future. But I've taken initial decision after that Saturday call. We ended collaboration on the winter low season, and I've never regretted about it. I don't recommend winter field service work at all 🙂

Last week, Indeed shared an analysis of the Top 10 most sought-after jobs by employers and Electricians ranked no. 6. The list noted the skilled trades industry had a more acute talent shortage, much like health care and hospitality. There’s a significant need for qualified electricians to keep our homes, businesses, and infrastructure powered. And as more electricians near retirement age, employers are hoping more younger workers will enter the field. In bracing for these shortages, we’ve implemented and grown our electrical programs at each of our campuses, including our newest electrical lineworker program that recently expanded from Dallas to Jacksonville. Our programs train students on the fundamentals of mechanical and electrical principles for work across residential, commercial, and industrial electrical industries. “Thelma, you ask a lot of questions!” Yep! I get that a lot from people. You see, I thrive working with people from diverse professional backgrounds. In my administrative roles, I’ve had the chance to interact with many different professionals and it has been a blessing! In my first ever administrative role, for every job that came to my desk, I would ask questions to gain a better understanding. “What does this legal term mean?” to our legal officer, when drafting correspondence. “What is this, and what does it do?” to artisans like electricians and HVAC technicians, while processing their invoices for payment. “What material is this made from, and why use this instead of that?” to the paint production manager. The funny thing is, even though they sometimes grumbled at my endless questions, they were always willing to chat and share their knowledge. Asking questions has helped me in building connections and learning from different fields. And let me tell you, it’s paid off in some pretty unexpected ways. A few years ago, while attending a job interview, after being asked the ‘expected’ questions, I was asked a question about how much diesel I thought the office would consume in a month! Yup!! Didn’t see that one coming. I almost panicked. Luckily, I remembered my conversations with Aminu, the generator technician at my former job and quickly applied it to the question. Even the stern interviewer seemed impressed for the first time since I walked in. That is just one of many scenarios. Sure, Google is great and all, but there’s something different about getting real life answers from people who are in those fields. So, my advice? Never stop asking questions, my darlings. Whether for personal or professional growth, have those conversations. Be open to learning. Be curious. Let your inquisitiveness turn into insightful knowledge.
