What makes a good ad? I found this page in Hey whipple, squeeze this! by Luke Sullivan that mentions different creative formats. Considering the book was published in 1998, I was surprised that a number of the creative formats weren’t much different than what many brands and advertisers use today - whether it’s an Us vs Them, a founders ad, a customer testimonial, or features point out. So, if creative formats have stood the test of time, what makes a good ad vs a bad ad? Messaging. Creative formats are great, but the important thing is for you to connect with your audience. Dial in on your messaging, copy, and your story to make your audience feel something. If you can do that, more times than not your ad will perform.
