Offering jobs to those who can work, jobs that lead to savings is the way to go. Free Housing is appropriate for very poor, elderly, retired or disabled citizens only - or young but very poor people in recovery mode who are working full time (just need temporary shelter to save a penny to get out of the poverty cycle) so they can buy their own home in America 🏡 one day )
Biden-Harris Administration Expands Access to Housing for Veterans
New HUD policy changes will enable veterans with service-connected disability benefits access more housing opportunities
In Brief:
- making mandatory PHA's that administer HUD-VASH raise income limit to 80% AMI from 50%
- excluding Service Related disability income from the calculations
- approved "exception payments" of up to 140% of FMR
Comment - Gastonia Housing Authority does not participate in the HUD-VASH program, perhaps it is time, since the Gaston County area has over 17,000 military veterans?
*Foothills Region Authority (Foothills Region Planning Commission) coverage includes Cleveland County and do administer the HUD-VASH program in partnership with the Asheville VA and Veteran Services of the Carolinas.

Today is United Nations World Bee Day! 🐝 At CSC, beekeeping is one of the many employment and employability programs offered to inmates. This helps with their rehabilitation so they can learn important skills and become contributing, productive members of society when they return to the community.

One of the issues that I am most concerned about as a city councillor in Ottawa is housing. Supply. Market rate. Intensification targets. Subsidized. Rental. Freehold. Student. Family. Homelessness. Seniors. Affordable. Military. We need all stakeholders engaged to solve this crisis.
This is why as a veteran and as a municipal representative, I am committed to addressing the lack of military housing in our city. This is an issue all Federal parties can champion. This counts towards our goal of 2% GDP for NATO, for which we are deficient.
This will address a core aspect of the recruiting and retention problems currently plaguing the CAF. When a Corporal releases instead of taking a posting to Ottawa, we have a solvable problem. When a Lieutenant buys a home in Casselman, Carleton Place or Arnprior because they need to 'Drive to Qualify', we have a solvable problem.
There are technologies - like mass timber and factory built modular - that allow for building rapidly, at scale, environmentally friendly (net 0) and affordable mass housing options.
The City of Ottawa just built an LRT station at Uplands - literally just across the street from the Base. Someone working at carling could take LRT to Moodie and then a shuttle to Carling Campus - this is a textbook application of public transit. Our City Official Plan directs intensification in transit corridors. Our zoning bylaws are being aligned to promote density in proximity to major transit stations. The Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments have all declared that the housing supply shortage needs to be addressed. So, let's do it! For all the right reasons, we need Treasury Board to fund DND to allow them to significantly invest in military housing - nationally yes, but also right here in Ottawa at Uplands base. Thank you for publicizing this critical and solvable issue Scott Taylor.

Whew, Caroline A. Wanga hitting them high notes we need to hear.
The quote she references of Dr. Martin Luther King is, by far, my favorite and it goes like this:
"We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society, when machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered."
As I'm continuing to notice how much materialism, capitalism, greed and frankly just having nice things consumes are very being...
I often wonder "What would we do if capitalism went away?"
What are we all willing to give up to ensure those without basic needs like clean water, life-saving healthcare, shelter and nourishing food have these things?
How would this society behave if the government just decided no one would go without and ERRYBODY is getting a universal basic income? 🤔
QUOTE: "The norm that every abled person receiving cash payments should be seeking a job can also be challenged. First, holding a job is not the only form of work. Taking care of children and elders is work—work that is performed mostly by women without compensation. A basic income is a way of supporting and recognizing that work without intrusive state monitoring and reinforcement of gendered division of labor."

Anyway, this is just the early morning musings of someone who seriously wonders if this society can literally put their money where their mouth is when it comes to caring for its people.

At the invitation of Minnesota Governor #TimWalz and Minnesota Lieutenant Governor #PeggyFlanagan and #Minnesota Chief Equity Officer #DrStephanieBurrage … I had the opportunity to remind the residents of the State of #MN of what they are capable of building by the examples of Houston White and I.
As a part of the #OneDreamOneMinnesota#DrMartinLutherKing event, I referenced the 1967 #MLK quote below and connected it to how community has the ability to hold young dreams at risk of being deferred, until they manifest as dreams undeterred, if we can each deprioritize self-preservation and prioritize seeing those that are finding themselves as part of creating change in the world.

The City of El Monte, in collaboration with the Cesar Chavez Foundation, recently commemorated the grand opening of the Plaza "Mac" Ortiz II affordable housing development.
Ysabel "Mac" Ortiz, a beloved El Monte native and Army veteran who tragically lost his life in the Korean War, was finally laid to rest after nearly seven decades.
This new 53-unit housing complex will provide much-needed support for low-income families in the area. Additionally, the development includes the Si Se Puede Learning Center, an afterschool program for K-5 students, which is the foundation's flagship program.
