“I thought this was just the normal thing to do, to plunge into the unknown. It’s what my mother did. She left her career and moved into the family business. And so for me, there was a great deal of comfort in starting my own venture.
I've come to realise that the only safe element in anything is you. Only you know yourself, only you can back yourself and only you know what you're capable of. And I think what we tend to get tied to our existing success, our history. You owe it to yourself to go out there and be the best director and producer of your own life.
And I knew I needed to pursue my goals, but also invest in the vessel that was me along the way. When I left my corporate career and moved out of financial services into the world of start-ups, I thought really long and hard about how I could do it with longevity. I invested in myself like a professional athlete, with training, continual learning, meditation and connecting with mentors.”

CEO at Women In Tech & Entrepreneurship | CMO at RevStar | Bridging strategy and execution to solve complex problems
"The world has been telling you that you have to be a 'nice girl' and act a certain way to be worthy. That is not why we hired you and I'm here to tell you that belief is holding you back. Sometimes, you have to embrace your inner 🚫🚫🚫🚫🚫 and stand up for the respect you deserve."
👆 My first mentor and sponsor, giving me permission to shed my chains and show up fully as myself - assertive, outspoken, and defiant to the norms - because Yes Men aren't Change Makers. More at: https://lnkd.in/efBfHsF6
This podcast is one of the best conversations I've had in a long time, and wow did it bring me back down memory lane:
👉 From early career,
👉 to juggling RevStar and Women in Tech & Entrepreneurship,
👉 to the "why" and "how" behind it all,
👉 to our member success stories,
👉 to our plans for national expansion,
Paul Church brought it all out onto the table. I'm so thankful for his excellent interview skills and this unique opportunity to talk about how we got here and where we're headed next.
My most recommended resources for founders actually interested in scaling with integrity:
1. Female Founder World is the best community group, newsletter, and social channel for real world, tactical business advice from experienced founders who've been in the founder seat long enough to learn a thing or two.
2. Dream Ventures Accelerator creates the most accessible workshops, networking mixers, and investor intros for founders raising capital without a pre-existing network of wealthy friends & family.
3. The Black Beauty Club hosts the # 1 event series that serves as unofficial market research for founders looking to authentically tap into consumer trends, buying behavior, and decision making power of the globe's largest consumer segment.
4. Second Life Podcast by Who What Wear offers the best "look what I did" stories from notable CEOs, founders, and execs across every industries so you can learn from them without having to make the same mistakes yourself.
My clients are the ones building businesses that are both economically successful and impactful. Strategic advisors, smart decisions and values-aligned resources are the trifecta bringing them massive $$$ and peace of mind. They know they don't have to abandon their values to make their business dreams come true.
#venturecapital#femalefounder#angelinvesting#impactatscale#BIPOCfounder
When I guest on podcasts, I usually talk about #opensource or #positioning or #monetizationstrategies or some combination of those topics. But as I always remind my clients, everyone likes to talk about themselves and I'm no exception. So when Rochelle Moulton asked me to come on her podcast and give listeners a peek behind the curtain, I agreed.
There's a couple reasons I was excited to do this podcast. First of all, it allowed me to reflect on all the experiences I've had and how I'm bringing them together in my professional life now.
Second, as Rochelle mentions below, I have some thoughts about risk that I think are important to share. In particular, I see a lot of women being really hesitant about things that feel risky but actually aren't, and I find this really frustrating. (I know these opinions aren't politically correct, but if you actually care about helping women advance in their careers you shouldn't pretend that there aren't real differences in how men and women behave).
Lastly... as some, but not all, people in my network already know, I had a rough couple years around 2015-2017... my late husband was diagnosed with cancer while I was pregnant and died when our daughter was 2 months old, my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer a month before his death and died a year later. The point I want to make here is 1) Did y'all know young widows exist, and some of us are pretty professionally successful? And not just Sheryl Sandberg 😂. In fact, I know a guy in the open source startup space who's a former founder and now a VC whose first wife died in childbirth. 2) Sometimes shit goes wrong in your life, and it's not your fault. This is something society does not always like to acknowledge, but we do not have 100% control over our lives. I like how Annie Duke put it: there are two things that determine the quality of your life: luck and your decisions. Also good for people to remember that one, or two, bad things that happen to you does not have to mean your life is fucked.
Anyway, go listen to the episode, follow the amazing Rochelle Moulton and shoot for the fucking moon, because you don't know how long you have and you're more likely to regret not trying than you are to regret having tried and failed.
I help six figure Soloist consultants smash through their revenue plateau. Author: The Authority Code. Host: The Soloist Life podcast
You’ve made bold moves to get where you are, including having the guts to buck the norm and go solo.
But are you still taking new (calculated) risks to build the business and life you’ve imagined?
Consultant to open source start-ups—and confirmed risk taker—Emily Omier believes we need to take more risks. She shares her gutsy story and what it’s taught her about risk in this new episode of Soloist Women:
What happens when you hit rock bottom in your life (while running your business) and must pull yourself out of it.
The difference between something that is risky vs. something that feels risky.
Why we—women in particular—don’t take nearly enough thoughtful risks.
The road from “mercenary” (where it’s mostly about the money) to collaboration (where it’s all about relationships and outcomes).
How paying attention to these two emotions will teach you what risks are worth your time and investment.

"If you've got people who are learning skills that you know are required by your organisation, you can start to be really agile and flexible when a project comes up... It's starting to look at what skills do we need for what project at what point in time, and how can we be mobilising our people to fill those needs."
Cia Kouparitsas joined the Entrepreneur Her podcast last week to discuss end-to-end skills-based employment and how organisations should be mapping, mobilising and growing skills as the currency for the future of work.

I love every one of the conversations I get to have on Venture Visionaries with Thomas Igeme, but there are some that feel not just deeply valuable, or even inspiring, but desperately urgent for our times.
This week's episode with Nisha Anand, CEO of Dream.Org is one of those. Founded by activist, entreprenuer and CNN Host Van Jones, and now supported by Jeff Bezos' inaugural $100M Courage and Civility Award, Dream.org has a simple but audacious premise in our current political climate - that the biggest challenges facing our nation and world, from climate change to criminal justice reform, need a better answer than our petty party politics.
Despite what social media or congress would have us believe, cooperation across the aisle for the greater good isn't just possible - it's happening!
In this episode, we sit down with Nisha to explore:
🌍 How bipartisan efforts can lead to significant societal change.
💡 The impact of Dream.org's initiatives on criminal justice reform and environmental sustainability.
🤝 The power of unity in driving forward the most pressing issues of our day.
As we head into another groudhog day election cycle, that seems to promise only more divison, join us as we discuss the importance of bridging divides and fostering collaboration for a better future. Your next inspiration might just be a listen away! 🎧

A short story about founders and investors...
If you’re a founder, you want to make your ideas happen and grow your business 🚀
But it’s not always that easy.
If you’re an investor, you want to back the best ideas and companies out there.
But what if some of those ideas aren’t even landing on your desk in the first place?
The truth: female founders have a much harder job scaling their business than their male counterparts.
Which means that founders, investors and the UK economy end up missing out on opportunities to create thriving businesses of the future.
The question is, why? And what can we do about changing it? 🤷
In Episode 70 of #TheGreenRoom, we’re joined by two exciting guests – Sophie Winwood, co-founder and CEO of Women in Venture Capital: Europe (WVC:E) and Deloitte alumna and Jodi Birkett, our UK TMT Leader as we take a closer look at the challenges and opportunities when it comes to backing female-founded businesses.
Tune in to find out:
🤔 What the funding gap is and why it exists
💸 An insight into why the funding gap needs to close and the benefits
💭 Sophie’s experience as both an investor and a founder
🙌 How we can create more opportunities for founders and less blockers
