Such eye-opening findings! The LGBTQ+ community has a vastly different experience with the healthcare system than the rest of the population, and that certainly extends to IBD care. A recent survey from Global Healthy Living Foundation on LGBTQ+ and living with IBD found some incredibly interesting statistics:
🟣 Only 𝟐.𝟓% of LGBTQ+ people say there are easily accessible resources for them on living with IBD.
🟣 Participants seeing a primary care provider for their IBD were 𝟏𝟎 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 not to be on medication than non-LGBTQ+ individuals.
🟣 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟖𝟎% of clinicians believe patients would be unwilling to provide their sexual orientation and gender identity, while only 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝟏𝟎% of patients would actually be unwilling to do so.
🟣 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝟏/𝟑 of participants were unsure which kind of IBD they had.
Clearly, the difference in healthcare access that LGBTQ+ individuals face extends deeply into IBD care, which is inherently linked to mental health! Great resources in this article for community members living with IBD.
