#SouthAfrica 🇿🇦 | #Libya 🇱🇾: South African police have detained 95 Libyan nationals on suspicion of receiving training at illegal military camp located at a farm in White River in Mpumalanga province in northern country. National police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathe said in a post on X that the Libyans said they were entering the country on study visas to train as security guards, but police investigations suggested they had received military training. https://lnkd.in/dy_ehhSj Libyan Foreign Ministry of the Government of National Unity in #Tripoli categorically denied that the 95 Libyans arrested in South Africa were affiliated with the government and its institutions, adding that it had tasked the military prosecutor and the Libyan embassy in South Africa to communicate with the relevant authorities in Johannesburg to follow up on the circumstances of the case. Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the parallel government in eastern Libya, Abdul Hadi Al-Huweij, announced on Friday that legal support would be provided to Libyans detained in South Africa. He told Sky News Arabia that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was following up on the situation of the detained Libyans and would provide them with legal support. 🚨Travel and work abroad are associated with security risks that can come from many different sources and their impact on people and business can be devastating. Security & Risk Management Consultant, Canadian Immigration Consultant. Talks about: Geo-Politics| China Threat| Work Place Violence| ORC| Agile & Scrum
This could be a consequential legal decision by the Canadian court regarding the powers of CBSA officers to search the phones, tablets, and laptops of passengers coming into Canada. This can be argued on both sides, which is the laws would give the officers at the border to be more deligent and proactive in identifying individuals with suspected criminal activities or ties to extremists groups, which we are witnessing in Canada and around the world in recent years. One such case involving father and son with ties to ISIS recently arrested in Toronto. On the flip side, there are enough number of complaints from passengers crossing into Canada being harrassed by border officials. One such prominent case that came to light, when CBSA officers seized thr laptop and cell phone of a Lawyer Nick Wright, who was coming back from a trip to Gutemala and Colombia. With Canada having strong constitutional rights, often extended to temporary residents entering Canada, it is always a challenge to draw a line as to when and how the officers should and should not be conducting searches of personal electronic devices. Yet, the current geo political conditions and increase in numbers extremists activities involving individuals, who may not be identified unless measures are in place.

✍ OCP Director Cathy Haenlein's new RUSI Commentary on Organised Crime and the #UKBorder is the final in the #10Years10Threats commentary series. Here, Cathy positions the UK Border as both a key opportunity and vulnerability. As the point of entry for a majority of organised crime's key commodities - such as drugs, firearms and trafficked persons - it offers the UK a strong line of defence. However, the need to circumvent border police has fostered criminal innovation and adaptability. Read here as Cathy Haenlein describes the dual nature of the UK Border in the fight against organised crime: https://lnkd.in/eQq9HywQ ⬅ Missed any of the previous 9 RUSI Commentaries in the #10Years10Threats series?
