📢 Ministry of Interior Enforces Compliance with Residency, Labour, and Border Security Regulations 📢 From July 11 to July 17, 2024, the Ministry of Interior conducted rigorous inspection campaigns across Saudi Arabia. The campaigns aimed to ensure adherence to residency, labour, and border security laws, resulting in: • Total Violations Recorded: 19,817 • Residency: 12,436 • Border Security: 4,881 • Labour Laws: 2,500 • Illegal Border Crossings Attempted: 1,389 (45% Yemenis, 53% Ethiopians, 2% Other Nationalities) • Illegal Departure Attempts Arrested: 48 • Individuals Arrested for Transporting/Sheltering Violators: 9 • Expatriates Undergoing Procedures: 17,067 (15,394 men and 1,673 women) • Detentions for Violations: 7,139 • Deportations Completed: 14,471 The Ministry warns that facilitating illegal entry, transportation, or sheltering violators can result in up to 15 years in prison and fines up to SAR1 million. Vehicles and houses used may be impounded. This could be a consequential legal decision by the Canadian court regarding the powers of CBSA officers to search the phones, tablets, and laptops of passengers coming into Canada. This can be argued on both sides, which is the laws would give the officers at the border to be more deligent and proactive in identifying individuals with suspected criminal activities or ties to extremists groups, which we are witnessing in Canada and around the world in recent years. One such case involving father and son with ties to ISIS recently arrested in Toronto. On the flip side, there are enough number of complaints from passengers crossing into Canada being harrassed by border officials. One such prominent case that came to light, when CBSA officers seized thr laptop and cell phone of a Lawyer Nick Wright, who was coming back from a trip to Gutemala and Colombia. With Canada having strong constitutional rights, often extended to temporary residents entering Canada, it is always a challenge to draw a line as to when and how the officers should and should not be conducting searches of personal electronic devices. Yet, the current geo political conditions and increase in numbers extremists activities involving individuals, who may not be identified unless measures are in place.
