In 2018, ActionStation supported local communities to make establishing Māori wards easier and improve Māori representation at a council level. Together, we were successful in changing the legislation that led to Māori wards flourishing around the motu. But the Coalition Government plans to reverse this legislation, force an impossible ultimatum on post-2022 Māori wards and go back to enabling a small minority of racists to disestablish Māori wards in the future. There are too many reasons why this is a bad idea. It takes us backwards in our Te Tiriti relationship, causes unnecessary racism and uncertainty towards existing Māori ward councilors, wastes time and public money, and distracts councils from the real issues they need to focus on. Our team has reconnected with local community leaders who pushed for Māori wards in the first place, and will be doing whatever we can to protect Māori wards into the future. Despite the strain on their community, some Haitian and long-time Springfield residents are coming together in church to heal. In Springfield, the influx of workers to fill job vacancies has led to a strain on resources and increased rent prices, negatively impacting long-time residents. This pattern of events, with resources lagging behind needed workers arriving, is not unique to Springfield as it has occurred in other communities as well. Storm Lake, Iowa, is an example to explore. ✅ Preparation for such an influx is critical. We must plan for the predictable strains caused by an increase in population to ensure the well-being of both newcomers and long-time residents. Allocating resources in advance for affordable housing, language services in schools, and incentives for attracting essential workers can help prevent conflicts and reduce intergroup fear. Investing in proactive measures is crucial. By addressing these issues before they escalate, we can promote unity and lessen the impact of racism and division in our nation. Let's work together to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all residing in our country. We are the United States of America, and we can get this done. #CommunityUnity #InclusivePlanning #ResourceAllocation #UnityOverDivision #ChurchandUnity https://lnkd.in/gzD-WKAf

At the Warande Advisory Centre, our focus is on capacity-strengthening civil society and empowering communities through effective governance, robust systems, and cultural development. We strongly believe that the strength of civil society is integral to maintaining government accountability, good governance, and advocacy for marginalised groups. Without its robust presence, civic participation wanes, social services falter, and societal cohesion suffers due to diminished social capital, hindering innovative solutions to social challenges. Thus, the vitality of our democracy and the equilibrium of societal constructs hinge upon a thriving civil society. If you are interested in learning more about how we can collaborate, please feel free to contact us. Together, we can make a difference in realising socioeconomic development. #capacitybuilding #sustainability #empowerment #system #change #governance #accountability #advocacy #process

One interesting angle on advocacy are the efforts some people devote to prodding certain key players to get more involved. In sectors like philanthropy, there can be a reluctance because it seems too political. As founder of the Center for Community Foundation Policy Leadership, longtime criminal justice reform advocate Stephen Saloom has been focused on encouraging and supporting community foundations to advocate on their issues. As Stephen shared on the podcast, the strongest case for doing so traces back to these organizations' stated missions. Community foundations' missions typically commit them to the well-being of the local populace in the broadest terms—as broadly as any governmental body or public official. So it's only logical, Stephen argues, that community foundations should get engaged in questions of policy that affect the local community. https://lnkd.in/gbzzT-Ba
"Community foundations have committed themselves to such broad missions, taking interest in government policy is necessary." — Stephen Saloom - The Battles We Pick
